This North Mill Creek Lutheran and Reformed Church record reveals the family
of Henry and Magdalena Sellers. It provides ages, dates and clues to
relationships within the family. It doesn't tell us who Henry Sellers was.

The record of the North Mill Creek Church of near Petersburg, Grant Co., WV
begins in some unknown year preceding 1791and ends in 1889. I will quote the
introduction to the records, which says:

"All services were held in German and it is probable that the passing of
this language from the descendants of the founders of the church was largley
responsible for the church becoming defunct. A Rev. Mr. Wille who is said to
have served the church in 1791 and again in 1795-1805 is traditionally known to
have been the first resident minister but it is not known whether he served
the Lutheran or German Reformed congregation or both."

The Fort Wayne transcribers (in 1996) said "much of the material in the old
record was not copied as the pages were badly mutilated and the references
fragmentary and mostly about affairs that the WPA workers thought had no
statistical value..."

The papers which could be transcribed in 1966 were:
List of Deaths, page 1
List of Births, page 2
Church and Membership Roll, pages 2,5,6,7,8,and 10.
"First Intact Page:recto" in German
15 records of births and baptisms.

Here are the entries under the name Zeller or names that could have been
Zeller but were transcribed incorrectly. (There were no entries under Sellers,
but census records of that time show a Henry Sellers in Hardy County, WV.)

2. Records of the North Mill Creek Lutheran and Reformed Church, copied by
the WPA in the 1930s and retyped in the 1960s, show Henry and Magdalene Zeller
as members. Copies of these records are at the Hardy County Public Library
in Moorefield. The log church was in a nearby area of neighboring Grant
County, WV
, at the junction of North Mill Creek and South Mill Creek, near
Petersburg. The papers were fragments when found in the 1930s, but appear to show
births, deaths, christenings, and membership. Zeller names are Catherine,
Elizabeth, George, Henry, Jonas, Magdalena, Margaret, and Mary.

Our Hardy County records on Sellers-Zellers show many more connections from
these names.

The discovery of these records came from searching old records of Hardy
County, WV, which is the county immediately east of Grant County, WV. Grant
County was created in 1866, Hardy in 1785. The county directly south of Hardy
County is the present-day Rockingham County, VA, where the Zeller/Sellers name
appears beginning in 1748.
