Do We Know where these families are in 1850? Advise and will add behind name?
Rachel Cash, wife of Jno. Cash, a soldier in the service of the United States
from this Commonwealth, being in distressed circumstances with two small
children, was allowed L30.
To add a bit more to the Michael Sellars listed on the 1810 Rockingham
County, Virginia, Census ....
Michael Sellers also appears on the 1787 Rockingham County "Personal
Property Tax Lists". He shows as owning 4 horses and 15 head
of cattle. A
SECOND Michael Sellers is also listed. It shows that the first
Michael
Sellers listed is responsible for paying the tax for the 2nd one.
This
means that the 2nd Michael Sellers is evidently the son and is Michael
Sellers, Jr.
On this tax list, the county commissioner was required to note the
day he
visited each taxpayer and the "Militia District" in which each taxpayer
lived. These two Michael Sellers' were visited by the tax
commissioner on
March 12, 1787 and were located in Militia Company #9.
Additionally, in John W. Wayland's "Virginia Valley Records", under
'Militia
Vouchers' in 1788, the following listing appears:
under "Captain Richard Ragan's Company, No.13, Michael Sellers,
1 tithable,
son Jacob, 4 horses".
The 4 horses listed as part of Capt. Richard Ragan's Company for
the Militia
Vouchers in 1788 matches what was counted by the county tax commissioner
for
the 1787 Tax List for Rockingham County. The Michael Sellers
on the Tax
List and the Michael Sellers listed in Wayland's is the same person.
So, this Michael Sellers was most definitely in Rockingham County
Virginia
as early as 1787, he had a namesake in Michael Sellers, Jr., and
another
son, Jacob.
I still haven't a clue as to which family he fits into. The
Michael Sellers
in Rockingham County is most definitely German. I think
maybe one of the
keys to figuring how who he was and how he fits is to uncover who
this
"Captain Richard Ragan" was, did he serve in the War, and, if so,
did his
Company serve in the War and WHERE?

Rockingham county, Virginia, Tax Lists: June 19, 1789: District 10 Michael Sellers: 1 white male over 16 in household, 4 horses May 21, 1791: Richard Ragan's company Michael Sellers: 4 horses Jacob Sellers: No marks James Sellers: No marks March 14, 1792: Richard Ragan's company Michael Sellers: 4 horses Jacob Sellers: No marks James Sellers: No marks August 6, 1793: Josiah Harrison's company (District 8) James Sellers: 1 horse Michael Sellers: 3 horses Jacob Sellers: No marks On the 1791, 1792, & 1793 Tax Lists Michael, Jacob, and James are listed in line and together. The "No marks" besides Jacob's and James' name in 1791 and 1792 appears to show that they were old enough to be listed but did not have taxable property. I think it can be assumed here that Michael was their father. Its also interesting to note that Michael Sellers was listed with 4 horses in 1789, 1791, & 1792 while in 1793 he was listed with 3 horses with the 4th apparently being owned by James. I also have a reference that a "Michael Sellers" sold land to a "James Sellers" in 1808 in Rockingham county, Virginia. This was about 4 years prior to Michael's death circa 1812 in R'ham county. His death may have been one of the reasons that James headed around that time for Harrison county, IN.

I have a book in my possession, "Cradled By the Massanutten: The
Zellers-Sellers Family" by Mary Marie Koontz Arrington published in
1986. The author lists Heinrich Zellers and family of Weinheim,
Baden,
Germany taking a barge down the Rhine in 1738 on his way to
Philadelphia. The family settled in Augusta Co. VA (now Rockingham
Co.). Later records show the family using the Sellers name.
Seeking information on Diana SELLERS, who was married to William BAKER.
Diana was the
mother of Elizabeth BAKER, my 2nd great grandmother. Elizabeth was
married to Peachy
DERROW. The SELLERS Family were Rockingham, Va. residents.
William Mears Sr. was first married to Mary "Polly" Barnes the
daughter of James
Barnes and Margaret Foster Barnes Stevens who resided on Brush
Creek,
Washington Co., TN. This area is now Johnson City, TN. William
Sr. and Mary had
one daughter, Margaret Barnes Mears (Meirs) who married David
Sellers who
was the son of Peter and Catherine (Armentrout) Sellers of
Rockingham and
Augusta Counties, VA.

Marie--As I got out my old boxes to find the Benjamin Franklin Sellers
of
Bond Co., IL pension papers, I found I had a copy of the Sellers
Family
History 1771-1975, put together by Mrs. Whitfield T. Sellers.
Have you had
access to it? These are Sellers of Rockingham and Augusta
Counties, VA,
and most particularly the family of Jerome H.B. Sellers., son of
John Sellers,
who deeded it to his son Jerome H.B. in 1858. Jerome H.B.
and wife
Margaret Belle Sellers had sons who went west and settled in Iowa
and South Dakota.

I'm wondering if one or both of you can help me identify some
individuals by the surname SELLERS that I cannot positively identify
at
this time.
The persons I am talking about were mentioned in old letters written
by
members of my family. Most of these letters were written by
people
living in the Shenandoah valley of Virginia, typically Rockingham
County
and nearby areas.
The following are links to the letters that mention Sellers:
1)
<http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mdtaffet/gibbons_letter_1862_03_25.htm>
This one mentions a Dr. Sellers.
2)
<http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~mdtaffet/gibbons_letter_1862_09_27.htm>
This one mentions Doctor Sellers and Miss Betsy Sellers.
I'm pretty sure I can help you out with at least some of this.
In the one
letter mentioning Dr. Sellers and Betsy Sellers, she also mentions
a "Lizzie
Maggart". Lizzie Maggart was Elizabeth Magdalene Maggard,
daughter of Anna
Persilla SELLERS and Reuben C. Maggard. Anna Persilla SELLERS
was the
daughter of Henry and Molly (Hedrick) Seller, grand daughter of
Adam and
Barbara (Teeter) Sellers and Great Granddaughter of Heinrich and
Anna Maria
Zeller. Lizzie (Sellers) Maggart was born September 4, 1842
and died March
26, 1917.
The "Dr. Sellers" was likely Dr. Theodore Napoleon Sellers, son of
John
Conrad and Catherine (Brown) SELLERS. He was born May 12,
1830 and died
January 26, 1918.
As for "Betsy Sellers", I'll have to check what I have as there are
so many
Elizabeth's in the family, I don't know offhand which one she might
have
been.
Hope that helps.
Michael Sellers
That was very helpful. I will add the identification of Lizzie
Maggart/Maggard just as soon as I can, and also the probable
identification of Dr. Sellers.
