MAURY CO, TN

MAURY COUNTY, TENNESSEE SCHOOL CENSUS

1838

From Volume V, 1969, Maury County Historical Society, "Historic Maury"
               “State of Tennessee Maury County. We the undersigned commissioners for Common schools in District No.____ do in accordance with a law passed at Nashville on the 24th day of February 1837 entitled an act to establish a system of common schools in the State of Tennessee make the following report of the Scholastock population of said district over the age of 6 years and under the age of 16 years on the__day of 1838 and the name of the persons with whom they reside.”
Districts 1, 2, and 3 were missing from the 1838 census; possibly because these districts were involved in the land cession made when Marshall County was set up in 1836. On January 25, 1836, Districts 1 and 2 were located in the southeast corner of Maury; District 3 was located north of District 1, south of Duck River, and ran along the eastern border of Maury. After Marshall County was formed and prior to 1842 the northwestern corner of Maury became District #1. The new District 2 was located then in the southwestern portion of Maury,  and at least part of this District went into the new county of Lewis in 1843. At least a part of District 3 seems to have remained in the same location in Maury County. The following District 1-3 records are the first available for these three districts.
DISTRICT 1  July the 4th, 1842. (Note: included 167 children over the age of six years and under twenty-one years.)

Note by Virginia: Names on this list show there was some reorganization of districts between
l838 and 1842: Some of these names appear on the 1838 list for the 15th District; also some are
on the 1843 list for the 2nd District. We Know that some of the people listed on all three of these
mentioned lists lived in what became Lewis County. When Lewis County was first organized;
practically all of Maury County west of Big Bigby Creek was taken into Lewis . However, in 1852
Maury County petitioned to have part of this territory taken back into Maury, since the county was
smaller than its constitutional llmits .
