The info I have is only for the 12 townships in the Upper part
of Bucks
County, namely Durham, Nockamixon, Tinicum, Plumstead, Srpingfield,
Haycock, Bedminster, Richland, Lower Milfor, Rockhill, Hilltown
and New
Britain.
The 1798 Direct Tax led to the Fries Rebellion in Pa. A brief background
on
this tax: The Federalists decided to raise $2,000,000 in 1797
from what
they called the House Tax. It was a direct tax on property,
houses and
slaves. Pennsylvania was to contribute $237,000. There weren't
many
salves
in Pa at that time so the tax was mainly to be collected from dwellings
andproperty It was also known as the Window Tax since measuring
the size
of windows and counting window panes was a part of the assessment.
It was
also called the "Hot WaterTax" because housewives poured hot water
on the
assessors from their second story windows to discourage them.
Itwas also
called the "Milford Tax" since the main opposition seems to have
been from
dthat twp. Ultimately several people were arrested and tried
for
resisting
the tax, among them John Fries. Anyone interested in some
"fun" history
of
taxation in Colonial America might want to read more on it.
In 1798 Upper Bucks County was mostly German. Here is a breakdown
of
German and British Isles Origins:
Bedminster - 88% German, 12% British Isles
Durham - 66% German, 34% BI
Haycock - 80% German, 20% BI
Hilltown - 67% German, 33% BI
Lower Milford - 85% German, 15% BI
New Britain - 39% German, 61% BI
Nockamixon - 70% German, 30% BI
Plumstead - 45% German, 55% BI
Richland - 55% German, 45% BI
Rockhill - 90% German, 10% BI
Springfield - 81 % German, 19% BI
Tinicum - 69% German, 31% BI
The way it is listed is Occupant; Owner; and then lists the adjoining
property owners. Then it lists size and type of dwelling,
outhouses,
house
valuation, total valuation, other buildings and acreage. I've
only listed
the latter details for Seller/Sellers. If a SELLER/s was adjoining
a
property, I did not list the details. Wealth dictated the type of
house,
even down to how the log cabins were built; stripped log, dovetailed
etc.
Lowest on the list would be a barked log cabin, moving up to stripped
bark
with dovetails; then log and stone and finally all stone.
Obviously 2
story homes were for the more well to do families as well.

Anyone interested in the book can contact Adams Apple Press, PO Box
E,
Bedminster, Pa 18910. I think I paid $30. It was worth every
penny. It
was abstracted and compiled by Harry Adams, though he died a few
years
ago.
His wife has tried to continue printing up a lot of his notes
that he had
in the works at the time of his death. Sometimes she is slow
to answer,
but she seems to try hard and is a very nice lady. When I
found this
book,
it became one of my favorites. I guess I had not really stopped
and
thought about the size/type of houses our ancestors lived in.
I knew that
they didn't live with all the modern conveniences we have, but this
book
gave me a dose of "reality".

VI. Henry G. MOYER, born and reared on his father's farm in Hilltown, attended the public schools, and later other institutions of learning, and closed his education with a course at Quaker City Business College, Philadelphia, from which he graduated with high honors in 1868, at the age of twenty. In 1879 he was elected justice of the peace, and since that time has done a large amount of public business, officiating as executor, administrator and agent in the settlement of estates, attending to the survey and transfer of real estate and other business of a public character. In 1882 he purchased a one-half interest in "The Central News," a paper published at Perkasie, with Mahlon SELLERS, and conducted it under the firm name of Mahlon Sellers & Co., becoming one of its editors. Mr. SELLERS' dying soon after, his interest in the paper was purchased by Samuel R. KRAMER, and the firm name became Moyer & Kramer, and that firm conducted the paper and a job printing office in connection therewith until 1904.

I find
it.
Only thing so far: Richard C. Sellers married (no date)
Anna Atkinson
b.7 April 1872, dau. of T. Howard Atkinson and Mary Williams Atkinson
I
have indexed 170 page and so far have 4600 names mentioned at least
once.
Without an index it is impossible to look up your ancestors, please
understand. Thank you.
Abraham Wombold purchased a tract
of land and built a grist mill in 1738. He was followed to
the area by
SAMUEL SELLERS who built a dwelling and tavern.. He became a member
of the
Assembly and High Sheriff. He died 18 Aug. 1817. Sellersville
opened a
post office in 1820 and Thomas Sellers was appointed postmaster.
Relationship was not given for these 2 men.

Hi again. The dates could support assumption that Abraham was son
of
Leonard. My database shows Leonard and Barbara,2d wife, producing
these
folks:
Susanna 1767,Abraham 1768,Elizabeth 1770, Jacob 1772, John Phillip
1773,
Anna Margarat 1780,
Gertrude in 1783, and finally John George in 1785. Leonard's death
shown in
1805 in Bucks.
Date of death of first wife Anna is unknown as is wedding date for
either
wife. My GG GF Leonard did not leave Bucks for Franklin
until nearly 1800.
He probably knew some of these half cousins(guess that is proper
term).
I have had no luck linking two other Sellers families in Allen
Cnty OH
circa 1837-40.
Hope this helps someone.
