IVANHOE =
Located about 40 miles northwest of Wilmington in Sampson County, the area was settled by Scotsmen migrating up Black River in the early 1700s.
Black River is a beautiful and serene river that drifts lazily through the village. It forms in Sampson County by the junction of Six Runs Creek and the Coharie River and flows on the Bladen/Sampson County line, the Bladen/Pender County line, and into Pender County before dumping into Cape Fear River at the New Hanover County line.
In 1750 the northern part of NEW HANOVER CO, which
extended westward to SOUTH RIVER (called BLACK RIVER at that time) became
the new county of Duplin. The original western boundary of DUPLIN
CO was Little Coharie Creek. This left a narrow strip of land between
Little Coharie and South River as part of New Hanover
Co. This strip was added to Duplin Co in 1751.
The original southern boundary of Duplin ran from
the mouth of ROCKFISH CREEK in the Northeast Cape Fear River in a direct
line to the fork of Black River, where Coharie and SIX RUNS come together
and then ran west to South River.
In 1766, the south boundary was altered to run along
Rockfish Creek to the mouth of Doctor's Creek and then a direct line to
the fork of Black River.
In 1784 the western part of Duplin Co became Sampson
Co.
The southern boundary of Sampson Co has been extended
several times, including the addition
of a small section between South River and Black River in 1795, to achieve
the present day boundary (max r. peterson, jr, abstracts of Sampson Co.deeds)
=====
Remember some of the names have changed over the years
in the early land deeds. What is now BLACK RIVER was once called COHARIE
and SOUTH RIVER was once called BLACK RIVER.
and also, many CREEKS have the same name.
Often a branch was referred to by the name of the
person who owned land adjoining it. ,msh

of Isle of Wyght" to place customs officers at the VA/NC border on the

distance from where ships come for trading.

1870 NEW HANOVER CO, NC
For those of you who cannot find members of Bethlehem Baptist at the
Church
cemetery, I have the following from Vol. III of McEachern's Pender
listings:
PRIDGEN GRAVEYARD: County #1103 2 and 3/10 [sic]
miles off #1103, turn right, then 2/10 mile to graveyard.
A. L. Pridgen: 5 Oct 1844 - 25 Oct 1930
Margaret A., wife of W.S. Pridgen: 14 Jan 1808 - 23 July 1903,
"Member of Bethlehem
Baptist Church."
William S. Pridgen" 9 Jun 1811 - 15 Feb 1897, "Member of Bethlehem
Baptist Church
about 60 years."
William Stephen Pridgen and Margaret Annie Larkens are on our website,
but not the
cemetery information or their children. If Rebecca concurs, maybe
we could post
them. According to the 1850 NC New Hanover Census, roll 638,
p. 363, side 1, their
children were:
Emily, age 11
Melvin, age 10
Daniel, age 8
Alfred, age 7 (probably the A.L. above)
Hannah A., age 5
Octavia, age 3
Mary, age 1.
Will check 1860 Census when I can get to library. Ava Healy.
