I have seen Cain Creek mentioned several times with the
Sellars.
Can anyone direct me or tell me Where Cain
Creek Starts and Ends. It
was listed in the
deeds in Burke Co. at one point. I know there is a Cain
Creek over in NC today. And my grandfather said he
was raised on Cain Creek.
So Any help would be great
in locating this Cain Creek. Thanks Dawn

The coordinates for the point at which Muddy Creek and Silver Creek
(as
described in the 1795 Deed for James Sellers) come closest
together are
35.684ºN, 81.8446ºW .
this is a good map for seeing how Muddy Creek and Silver Creek lie
in
relation to each other. The town of Patten, marked with a
red circle, is on
the South Branch of Muddy Creek. Following that
stream north you can see
where it branches from the North Branch, and
where it joins the Catawba
River just south of Lake James.
Going back to Patten and looking right (east) the next major stream is
Silver Creek. You can trace it back toward Morganton.
Apparently, the 100 acres in the deed of James Sellers 1795, describes
land
between these two creeks.

Not absolutely sure the excerpt is referring to a community or a family.
I
can't see where Greenlee is anywhere close to Muddy Creek. It is
however
right on Cane Creek.

By the way, in the Burke Co Deeds Muddy, Silver, Cain and Sellers
Creeks
are all mentioned as if in close relationship to each other.
Inthe following passage, I think the unclear word could be Persimmon, a
branch of Silver Creek mentioned in the
first deed listed on the land
records page.

If so, it may be that there was another Cain Creek to the East and South
of
Cane Creek. Just speculating. Should probably learn more about
surveying
methods back then. But it doesn't make sense to me to
locate a 50 acre
track between two creeks several miles apart.

From: CHARMAINE
NOINTELLG@aol.com
Muddy Creek is located in the southeast corner of Burke County, as is
Silver Creek. Muddy Creek headwaters originating in now
McDowell Co., NC and
flowsinto the Catawba. Silver
Creek is a little more easterly, but headwaters
form in now McDowell
Co., NC and flows into the Catawba just below
Morganton.
This makes sense, knowing that those Sellers in Burke living in that
area
intermarried with the families located close to the county lines
which form
McDowell and Rutherford, as they stand now. Before
1842, when McDowell was
created, that area was also part of
Burke. There are various creeks named
Cain or Cane in the area,
named after canebrakes, possibly the Cain Creek
referred to in the
deeds is the Cain Creek now located in the confines of
McDowell Co.,
NC borders.
As to James Greenlee, he was the brother in law of Gen. Charles
McDowell,
through his sister Grace Grizelle Greenlee Bowman. He
was one of the
largest property owners in Burke Co. In 1778 he bought 800acres
on the southside
of
the Catawba
River, on both sides of Silver Creek, which may account to the
reference to his property in the Huggins deed abstracts.
