Salem Reformed Church

JACOB ZELLER (ZOLLER) WIFE MARGRETHA

      1. ELIZABETHA BORN FEB 25, BAP. JULY 2, 1800
      2. JOHANNES BORN NOV 30., 1804 BAP. JUNE 15, 1805

JONAS ZELLER (ZOLLER) WIFE ELIZABETHA
     1. SARAH BORN MAR 2, BAP. JULY 20, 1800
      2, DAVID BORN MAR. 13 BAP. JUNE 15, 1805

(there is a pencil note between JACOB and JONAS says brothers, msh)

I believe most of them are in Cearfoss...or near there..  Called "Salem Reformed Church" on named rd....  The other church records for the births were

John was listed Baptism at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elizabethtown (Hagerstown)

Sarah was listed Baptism at Salem Reformed Church

Samuel was listed Baptism at Reformed Church of Hagerstown

These were the first 3 children but not born in the order above.  John first listed as Johannes of Jonas & Elizabetha Zoeller...  Sarah was listed dau. of Jonas & Elisabetha Zoller.  And Samuel was listed as son of Jonas & Elizabetha Zoeller

I would imagine that Jonas' brother Jacob was near somewhere, pretty sure at Salem.

Subject: Re: [MDWASHIN] CELLER

Jane,

The will index indicates there is an estate document for CELLER, Jn. f 1818 CELLARS, George fw 1828 In the estate distributions index. in 1799 John Cellars and Jacob Howe are administrators for George Troxell

CELLAR, George. Adm. Thomas Keller 4/13/1830; George Keller, heirs of
Margaret Hager (to wit: Matilda, John, Maria A.). There were several
distributions to George Keller, Margaret Hager's heirs and then to
George Keller, David Hager's heirs - the last in 1830. [I think this
entry indicates both spellings were used]

There are no CELLER grooms in the marriage index and only two brides: CELLER, Sus./John STRICKLEY 11/15/1831
CELLERS, Margaret/David HAGER 6/7/1803

There are quite a few under the KELLER, KELLAR spelling.

Depending upon how the name was pronounced (with a hard "k" sound as in
kick or a "c" sound as in cease) I would also look at Seller.

For example there is a listing in the will index for
SELLERS, George f 1856

The Maryland Herald
July 22, 1823
"Died Wed morning last, after a lingering illness, Mrs. Barbara Cellar,
wife of George Cellar of this county, in the 65th year of her age."

The Maryland Herald
Dec. 11, 1821
"Died Wed., Mrs. Margaret Cellar, widow of John Cellar and sister of
late Martin Kershner, Esq. in the 70th year of her age, also with a
stroke of the palsy."

Hagers-town Gazette
Mar. 20, 1810
"Sale at farm of Phineas Watson, formerly belonging to Michael Hager,
adj lands of George Cellar, John Hager and Philip Kessaker, mare,
saddle, cart and other."

In 1813, George Cellar is a co-executor with Benjamin Swingle for
Barbara Smith's estate. In 1814 he is executor for her husband Nicolas's
estate advertising for sale some of his property.

In 1814 George Needy was living on John Cellar's land 3 miles from
Hagerstown.

The Maryland Herald
June 17, 1812
"Meeting of Washington Rangers at Mr. Stine's Tavern; John Rench of
Peter called to the chair and John B. Pottenger appointed sec'y. Thomas
B. Hall elected as Captain, Henry Schnebly of Jacob 1st Lieutenant,
Isaac Celler, 2nd Lieutenant, and James Barnett, Coronet."

In 1801 there is a Capt. Cellar who is on a Republican Committee.

The Maryland Herald
Oct. 17, 1799
John Cellar was one of the elected members of the Washington County
Assembly.

My GGrandmother was Mary E Rummel, b in MD in 1853, married Geo W Sellers
and lived in Antrim Twp, Franklin Co, PA. The 1920 census shows her living
on Franklin St in Hagerstown, MD and that is the end of that trail. Her name
is on the tombstone with Geo W Sellers but it only shows her b-date, no date
of death. I believe her father was a barn builder named Harry or Henry.
Would you possibly have any info on this line of Rummel's?

This particular Jacob Zeller in Washington County, Maryland, was not a
Hessian solder.  I've stayed in contact with David Lee Zellers, who operates
the Zeller Family Website, and David is a direct descendent of the Jacob
Zeller in Wash Co., Md.
Jacob Zeller was born in America as were his children.  David and family are
still unsure as to who Jacob Zeller's parents were, and they continue to
search for clues.  We have continued to share notes and resources in the
possibility that the family of his Jacob Zeller and the family of my
Heinrich Zeller are somehow related.
Meanwhile, the only thing I can definitively state is that the Jacob Zeller,
who's Will was included in this email, was not a Hessian soldier in the
Revolutionary War.

Yes I have this family with some of our Zellers married into the family of Jacob in Washington County, MD.  Found that he was in the US illegally, actually left Switzerland without Government Consent..  Was registered as a Revolutionary Patriot, as well as Captain Jacob Zeller 1758-1833, both graves lay in despoiled condition in Zeller Family Cemetery near Hagerstown.  I was there in 1999 but didn't get to gaion entry into the Cemetery..  I now have photos of that area...  Terrible condition.  I have a daughter Cecelia Ann Zeller of my GGG Uncle David Zeller (Seller) 1805-1888 married a Henry Samuel Zeller who was a descendant of Jacob Zeller 1718-1794 mentioned above...  I believe them to be our cousins, but like I say I have no proof to that..  I have a file on both Zeller families in that area at that time...  Steve Higley's rendition of the MD. Census at the Seller Group Pages are all wrong..  They have my GGG Uncle Dave as son of Jacob instead of Jonas...  Michael Zeller is wrong...  I can send you the files if you like...

The first Jacob Zeller listed is son of Hans Jacob Zeller 1718-1794....  Which I believe to be our cousins...  The Census records state that JONAS was a native of MD. which most likely means he was born there...  Although I have heard many rumors to the parentage of Jonas Zeller, there has been no records surface so far, or as to the burials in MD...  John died in 1850 and I did find a newspaper posting as to his estate.  Later found Michael Cramer Zeller lands records sold to a family named WOLGAMOTT..

Alot of Zeller / Zellers land records exist in MD...  In Washington Co., alone there are 19 pages of Indexed listings which list all named land records...  I was fortunate to be able to copy alot of them but have gotten the other Zeller family mixed in with them...  I have pretty much seperated those to my family..  The land records for the Zeller / Zellers family date from 1778 to 1936...  I know my family wouldn't be there any later than 1844...  The ones that didn't migrate to Ogle Co., IL. would be there...

This Jacob Zeller must be a different Jacob than the father / son JACOB's

who were listed as Revolutionary Patriots.  Captain Jacob Zeller served

under Lantz in the Maryland Militia.  His father Jacob Zeller 1718-1794 was

also listed because he supplied Grain to the American forces during that

war.  Both are buried on the old Zeller Farm place near Hagerstown,

Washington Co., MD.  Other children are buried in Salem Graveyard located

closer to Cearfoss, MD. along ,members of my Zeller family who lived in the

same area.  My GGG Grandfather was JONAS ZELLER 1769-1835..  Alot of

confusion between both families there due to the names being too close to

each other...  We do know that JONAS had a brother JACOB who sold land to

JONAS in 1794.  JONAS does not show in Jacob Zeller 1718-1794 WILL, only

Captain JACOB,  and GRANDCHILDREN show up in the WILL of 1790...  JONAS

purchased land from Jacob his brother for five pounds, it was called

"Batchelors Delight"....  Jonas had a son DAVID 1805-1888 who sometimes used

SELLER as his last name, and I see that some earlier Census Records listed

my GGG Grandfather as SELLER as well as another JACOB...  I have some photos

of SELLER burials in Williamsport, MD...  Some are very hard to read...

There is a whole family plot there containing the SELLER surname, I snapped

a few shots when I was there in 1999 to take photos of Dr. Henry Zeller's

grave there in Riverview Cemetery.  Dr, Henry Zeller was a descendant of

JACOB ZELLER 1718-1794 buried in Zeller Family Cemetery located 3 1/2 miles

north of Huyett's Crossroads on U.S. Route 40...  I have the actual address

of the farm, but not in front of me.

Lauren,
Thank you so much! I was hoping there was a connection between the Cellers and the Hagers. Are the heirs of David Hager the same as the heirs of Margaret Hager?
I have a Hezekiah C. Hager in one of my lines. There is an online listing showing the middle name to be Cellar, which is what prompted my request. I have been trying to find the connection. Several Hagers appear in Ohio in 1850 with the place of birth being Maryland. Trying to figure out if I have the correct parents for him. I think father maybe Michael Hager, but so far, no proof.
This will give me something to go on.
Thanks again,
Jane

Re: [MDWASHIN] CELLER
Jane,
The will index indicates there is an estate document for CELLER, Jn. f 1818
CELLARS, George fw 1828
In the estate distributions index.
in 1799 John Cellars and Jacob Howe are administrators for George Troxell
CELLAR, George. Adm. Thomas Keller 4/13/1830; George Keller, heirs of Margaret Hager (to wit: Matilda, John, Maria A.). There were several distributions to George Keller, Margaret Hager's heirs and then to George Keller, David Hager's heirs - the last in 1830. [I think this entry indicates both spellings were used]
There are no CELLER grooms in the marriage index and only two brides: CELLER, Sus./John STRICKLEY 11/15/1831
CELLERS, Margaret/David HAGER   6/7/1803
There are quite a few under the KELLER, KELLAR spelling.
Depending upon how the name was pronounced (with a hard "k" sound as in kick or a "c" sound as in cease) I would also look at Seller.
For example there is a listing in the will index for SELLERS, George f 1856
The Maryland Herald
July 22, 1823
"Died Wed morning last, after a lingering illness, Mrs. Barbara Cellar, wife of George Cellar of this county, in the 65th year of her age."
The Maryland Herald
Dec. 11, 1821
"Died Wed., Mrs. Margaret Cellar, widow of John Cellar and sister of late Martin Kershner, Esq. in the 70th year of her age, also with a stroke of the palsy."
Hagers-town Gazette
Mar. 20, 1810
"Sale at farm of Phineas Watson, formerly belonging to Michael Hager, adj lands of George Cellar, John Hager and Philip Kessaker, mare, saddle, cart and other."
In 1813, George Cellar is a co-executor with Benjamin Swingle for Barbara Smith's estate. In 1814 he is executor for her husband Nicolas's estate advertising for sale some of his property.
In 1814 George Needy was living on John Cellar's land 3 miles from Hagerstown.
The Maryland Herald
June 17, 1812
"Meeting of Washington Rangers at Mr. Stine's Tavern; John Rench of Peter called to the chair and John B. Pottenger appointed sec'y. Thomas
B. Hall elected as Captain, Henry Schnebly of Jacob 1st Lieutenant, Isaac Celler, 2nd Lieutenant, and James Barnett, Coronet."
In 1801 there is a Capt. Cellar who is on a Republican Committee.
The Maryland Herald
Oct. 17, 1799
John Cellar was one of the elected members of the Washington County Assembly.
