Subject: [PAGREENE] Sollars Pensions
Hello Interested,
Well after abt. 5 months I have recieved Pensions for Levi
Britton Sollars Sr. and sons.
Levi Britton Sollars Sr. married Elizabeth Burns daughter of
James Burns and
Elizabeth Johnson and grandaughter of Alexander Burns and
Jane Carroll. (my
5th gr,grandparents)
Levi Sollars Sr. was b.April 17, 1810 and died April 25,
1892 at Wind Ridge
He was with 18TH PA. CAV.Company C. He was almost 60 when
he was discharged
in Alexandria Va.
His pension is bundled with his son ,Levi Britton Sollars
,Jr..who died in
service with 49th Pa. Volunteer Infantry Co. K. He
born.April 06, 1850 and
died June 02, 1865 Baltimore Maryland.
There is also a pension for son, Daniel Westley Sollars ,1st
West Virginia
Regiment Cavalry . He born January 12, 1844 and died
January 07, 1921,West
Finley, Pa.
The pensions amount to about 200 pages.
Browsing through them I was a little discouraged that Levi
Sr. didn't have a
place of birth or parents. I am very happy to find births
and deaths of
children.Looking like they were taken from a bible.
Overview :
Levi Britton Sollars Sr. had a very hard time getting his
pension .He had
several witnesses who came to his defense. It all seemed to
have started with
injuries he recieved while on duty.
Levi says,
" We were traveling the evening after Gettysburg when the
wagon driven by
George Parkhurst went of the road ,knocking me from my
horse. I fell down a
30 to 40 foot embankment and the wagon landed on me. The
teamster's lifted
the wagon off of me.I recieved broken ribs an injury to my
shoulder and
right leg. "
His pension says " he was a cook for 40 teamsters. "
The Wagon dumped out all the wheat and oats.
Levi was in several hospitals and was Honorably Discharded
in Virginia
9/2/1864
His pension says he married Elizabeth Burns April 30, 1839
in Richhill
Twp.,Green County.
Before the War he was a Blacksmith. He owned 113 acres after
the war in the
Windridge area.
The best part of what I found in his pension is Births and
Deaths.
They are as follow;

>
Levi Sollars Sr. is listed as Levi B. Sollars Sr. a few
times and his son is
listed as Levi Britton Sollars Junior or Jr..
Reading his sons part of the pension it is listed as a
"Mothers Pension".
Elizabeth had been to all the hearings regarding her son
Levi Jr., and
recieved 25.00 a month.
It says " Levi Britton Sollars Jr. died of Meningitis in a
Baltimore
Maryland Hospital " ,at age 16.
As for Levi Sr.'s son Daniel Wesley Sollars
So I don't have to transcribe it again go here to read his
pension

Marie,
I hope this finds you will and happy and enjoying
the first that summer
is throwing at
us! I was recently informed of a Levi Sollars (1810-1892)
and family which
I am
presently working on (see attached). Do you have anything "even
remotely)
on any of
them? Maybe Jim Sellars has something.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Considering the above burials, Levi and E. had a son
in 1830 that died same day,
and another in 1862 that died the same
day.
Elizabeth Burns Sollars was only 5 years and 1 day old when
the baby was born in
1830... Clearly to me it appears that Levi
and E. (his apparent 1st. wife) had this son. But if "E" died, then
where is she
buried? This would make Elizabeth Burns a
second wife and probably the mother of the other children,
though she was only 15
years old when Mary was born. Pretty
young to be a mother, but back then things were different.
The 1880 Census of Greene Co., PA would provide us
with years of marriage for
both Levi and Elizabeth and number of
children and more importantly, give us the place of birth of his
parents and her
parents which would be most useful
information in locating Levi's parents.
Maybe someone in your group has access to the census
records of Greene Co., PA
and can check into this for us if you
don't already have the information. Thanks Bob

ON LEVI B. SOLLARS CIVIL WAR CARD, it Looks Like (couldn't read very
good) Father ,
LEVI SALLERS had an application file on him
and also ELIZABETH SOLLARS, MOTHER. So kinda would indicate maybe
LEVI died first.
NOW, I didn't see LEVI SOLLARS, etc listed as head of house
on the 1830 or 1840
census. But, I don't have the date the 1830
census taken.
Could have lived at home? or cemetery error?
There is a will of GEORGE SELLERS 1832 =
that has a son LEVI, unmarried. I believe it is on the WILLS page.=

I haven't heard from anyone yet with ideas. I'm sure someone has
some.
I'll send a CC in case not an active member right now.

Hello Interested,
I sent an e-mail a while back regarding the pensions I got
on my 3rd
gr,grandfather Levi Sollars.I made a comment that the dates
for the births
of his family look like they come from a bible.Well they are
from his family
bible. For some strange reason copies of 3 original bible
pages came with
his pension.I know Levi Sr. had a very hard time getting his
pension . I
wonder if he used these as proof. He did have two sons in
the Civil War
along with himself. They are the only documents in his
pension file copied
that look very old ,torn and aged.On one of the pages,it is
actually
stitched together .I didn't see in the pension the first run
through of the
several documents that there was a letter referring to these
three pages.The
note said that they were unable to reproduce these documents
using our
normal reproduction process. This was caused by the aged and
faded condition
of the documents from which these documents were made.
You can tell that these bible pages were copied from the
originals because
there is no line around the photocopied page .They were
atop another piece
of paper ,then copied.
The original contents was written in by at least 3
different people.At
the top is a border similar to my family bible ,also at the
top it says
"Family Register".
I guess I should wonder if one could get these bible pages
back ? I doubt
that.
