ADVISE findings,

Elizabeth SELLERS was the daughter of Adam and Barbara (Teeter) Sellers
and
the granddaughter of Heinrich and Anna Maria Zeller.
She was born March 15, 1776 in Rockingham
County, near Elkton. She was
baptized at the Peaked Mountain Church on October 8, 1776.
Her Uncle and
Aunt, Johannes and Elizabeth (Pirkey) Sellers, were the sponsors
at her
baptism. She died April 27, 1862 and is buried at Brown Memorial
United
Church of Christ in McGaheysville, VA.
She married her first husband, John Jacob CASH, May 1, 1796 in Rockingham
County. Kersh was probably his original name, however, he
was listed as
"Jacob Cash" when they were married.
Elizabeth married a 2nd time to Matthias Snyder, and she carried
the Snyder
name to her grave. Her gravestone reads "Elizabeth Snyder".
I have a .jpg
file photo of the gravestone.
As to what happened to Jacob Cash/Kersh, I don't have a clue at
this point.
I don't have a record of their children, if any, either.
Likewise, I have no record of any children between her and Matthias
Snyder
nor do I have a marriage date for them.
Hopefully, what little info I have about Elizabeth and her immediate
family
will help the search. Elizabeth's father, Adam Sellers, was
my 5th Great
Grandfather so I've been researching that part of the Sellers family
as
well. I just haven't gotten anything in-depth so far as to
any offspring of
Elizabeth and Jacob Cash/Kersh nor of Elizabeth and Matthias Snyder.
Michael Sellers
Don't know if this helps or not but perhaps the info will have some value.
4 Kersh are buried at St. Michael's Church Cemetery, located on Route 837 in Rockingham County, which is now called St. Michael's United Church of Christ.
Jacob L. Kersh - born June 3, 1793; died January 20, 1837
Susanna Kersh, wife of Jacob L. Kersh - born October 6, 1796; died ? (the gravestone has sunk enough into the ground as to cover the death date).
Amanda K., wife of John Smith, daughter of Jacob and Susan Kersh. Born December 3, 1826; died April 27, 1869.
Adam Kersh - born November 16, 1828; died March 22, 1905.
I have no idea if they are any relation to Jacob and Elizabeth (Sellers) Kersh but its certainly possible.
Additionally, the following information comes from the Library of Virginia, Virginia Land Office Patents & Grants records concerning "KERSH":
August 3, 1771 - Land Grants
Mathias Kersh - 180 acres between Peaked Mountain and Shenandoah
River.
October 9, 1805 - Land Grants
Jacob Kersh - 6 acres adjoining his own land and Moungers land in
Rockingham County.
October 9, 1805 - Land Grants
Jacob Kersh - 2 3/4 acres adjoining Mungers land in Rappahannock
County (Extinct). This land was probably in then-Rappahannock County
before the boundaries changed and it became Rockingham County land.
October 9, 1805 - Land Grants
Jacob Kersh - 11 acres adjoining land of Mathias Kersh and Haines
land in Rockingham County.
June 27, 1829 - Land Grants
Jacob Kersh - 1 acre 2r. 4po. his portion of the land surveyed for
himself and Jacob Pletcher, etc. in Augusta County
July 30, 1841 - Land Grants
Mathias Kersh, JR. - 1 acres 36p. near Quails Run in Rockingham
County.
It appears to me that the Jacob Kersh listed in the 1805 Land Grants
is the son of Mathias Kersh and husband of Elizabeth Sellers.
The Jacob Kersh listed in the 1829 Land Grant is probably Jacob
L. Kersh, possible son of Jacob Kersh and grandson of Mathias Kersh.
And, the Mathias Kersh, JR listed in the 1841 Land Grant is the
son of Mathias Kersh, SR and brother to Jacob Kersh, husband of Elizabeth
Sellers.
Hope the info helps ...
Michael Sellers

Thanks for passing along the information. I don't subscribe
to the
Sellers mail list, so I would have missed it. Thank Michael for
me too.
The marriage date of 1/4/1796 that I have for Elizabeth Sellers
and John
Jacob Kersh came from a now deceased uncle, but he showed his source
as
Rockingham County Marriage Records, Book A, p. 657. He also
had a marriage
date of 2/2/1823 for Elizabeth and Mathias Snyder from the same
records, but
didn't give a book or page number.
I would guess that John Jacob is probably buried at the old
Cash (Kersh)
Cemetery at the edge of Shenandoah Valley Airport in Augusta County.
His
father, Mathias, and brother, Johan George, are also supposed to
be buried
there. There are no headstones, just a tangle of trees surrounded
by an
iron fence, but it lies within the airport property. Johan
George is my
gggg grandfather.
I have been trying to track down descendants from this Kersh
line, but
there are not too many , because many Kershes did not marry.
If you ever
come across any descendants from this couple, please let me know.
Hugh
Johan George mentions in his will that he inherited land from his brother, Jacob, indicating Jacob may not have had any sons to inherit his land. I have not seen a copy of Jacob's will.
So it looks like Jacob and and Elizabeth may have had one daughter and no sons. Thanks for all your help.
Hugh
Here's an interesting ironic twist to the Kersh and Sellers searches
....
As we've been discussing,
Elizabeth Sellers, daughter of Adam Sellers,
married Jacob Kersh, son of Matthias Kersh, on May 1, 1796.
This was Elizabeth's first marriage.
Her 2nd marriage was in 1823 to Matthias Snyder.
And now for the ironic twist.
According to the Peaked Mountain Church
records, the sponsor of John Mathias Snyder's baptism on January
26, 1793
was .... Mathias Kersh.
I found this to be really interesting....
