1870 MONTGOMERY CO, IN
1880 MONTGOMERY CO, IN
1881 H.W. Beckwith History pg. 374 - James
M. Seller, attorney,
Crawfordsville. James and Mary D. Seller were natives of Va.
and went
to Ky, then came to Montgomery Co, In in 1827. Mr. Seller
had been a
Capt. in the Black Hawk war. he first came in the spring and
started
the clearning and planted a small crop, then returned to Harrison
Co,
Ky, hiring a man to erect a hewn-log cabin
of fair size and two stories
high. This cabin is now owned by Marshall H. Seller, E. of
Crawfordsville. It has been boarded and ceiled. Into this
Mr. and Mrs.
Seller and four children moved in the fall of 1827. They bought
280-
acres. Mr. Seller became quite an active man in politics,
first as a
whig and later a republican. he was co. commissioner for several
years,
and in the winter of 1843-4 he represented the county in the state
legislature. He died Dec. 24, 1874 and his wife is still living.
He was
an elder in the Presbyterian church of which mrs. Seller is also
a
member. William A. Seller, son of the above was born Sept
20, 1823 in
Harrison Co, Ky.
He was marr. Oct 10, 1844 to Elizabeth Wilson, who was
b. Nov 24, 1824 in Miami Co, Ohio. They
farmed one year in Walnut
township, then two years in Franklin, and in 1849 they bougth 20
acres
of land and added to this till they now own 230. Mr. Seller
was first a
whig, then democrat and now a national. They have two children:
Louisa
J, now mrs. Peterson and James M.
James M. Seller, was
born Dec 20, 1845 in montgomery Co, ind. He
derived his education from the common schools and academy.
In 1869 he
began the study of law with James McCabe of Williamsport. He further
studied with John M. Butler of Crawordsville. After studying
one year
he went to Illinois, where he was engaged in teaching for 3 years
and at
the same time pursued his studies. Returning to in he associated
himself
with John W. Smith for the practice of his profession in 1872 in
Williamsport. In 1874 he located in Crawfordsville wher ehe
has become
established. In 1876 he formed a partnership with james Wright and
this
firm still continue to do business under the firm name of Wright
&
Seller. Mr. Seller is a stunch democrat and in 1880 was a candidate
for
the state legistlature. Mr. Seller was marr. May 1, 1877 to Laura
Heaton, daughter of James Heaton Sr one of the oldest settlers in
the
county. She was born May 1, 1846. They have had two children:
William
born June 9, 1878 and an infant (deceased). They Heatons are
related to
Gen. W.S. Hancock and figured in the revolution. Mr. Seller
is a Mason
and an active temperance worker. Mrs. Seller is a member of the
Methodist Church.
This family is NOT in the 1823-1988 Family
History book.
Hope this helped.
Since it was such a prominent family you might want
to hire Reed Morrow (see my Montgomery Co page
(www.wico.net/~zacho/montq.net)) to do some more research.
He is VERY
thorough and reasonable. Tell him I sent ya'. He is
not on the
internet. He is 40ish and believe this or not, stays home
and takes
care of his invalid mother -- don't find many like that anymore.
When
she is at dialysis every day for 4-5 hours he goes to the library
to
reserach and that gives him a bit of extra money. Anyway,
good luck on
your reserach. I assume James Sellers was the Craig exec because
of him
being an attorney???!!!
Good luck in your search.
Karen Zach
P.s. There are some Sellers in our phone book -- no idea if
they
connect -- only one in Crawfordsville proper -- Robert Sellers,
1597
Delegates Rd., Crawfordsvillle IN 362-4160. You might
try them.
KAREN, thank you so much for typing that all to us!
OR if you have scannner, advise which one and how you like - I'm
in
process of getting one, but, prices/models change so much lately,
I
haven't done anything!
Don't believe this is the JAMES SELLERS I thought I was tracing,
but
VERY glad to receive and will follow up on him -
I NOW see ISSAC SELLERS here in 1840 and his will in 1853, but,
haven't
proven him to OHIO in 1830 - where child born in 1832-(Butler Co,Oh,msh)
I am working on an older JAMES SELLERS connected to PUTNAM CO, and
thought
because counties were made from each other, may connect AND
they may
yet and JAMES SELLERS born 1823/6 had an older father or? that
administer will of WM CRAIG IN 1820/30!
JAMES SELLERS on 1830 census born 1790/1800-
BUT, ISAAC SELLERS on 1853 will = born 1787=?
