Wosson McCaslin, an old and respected citizen of Franklin Township,
was
born June 18, 1827,in Scott County, Indiana being the third in a
family
of seven children born to the marriage of David and Polly Sellers
McCaslin,
the former born in Mercer county Ky, in 1797 and died in Johnson
county
in 1873 and the latter was born in 1801 and died in this county
in 1871.
In the fall of 1827, the family emigrated to Johnson County and
settled
in Franklin Township, just west of the city of Franklin, where the
subject
of this biographical sketch grew to manhood. He attended school
at the
old log school house that was located in Franklin, near where the
Presbyterian
Church now stands. The life of Mr McCaslin has been that of a farmer,
which
he began for himself at twenty-one years of age, and, in 1856 settled
on
his present farm and now owns 360 acres of excellent and well improved
land. As a farmer and stock-raiser. Mr McCaslin is progressive and
up with
the times. He was united in mariage November 13, 1850, to Miss Jane
S.
Winchester, born in this county, September 28, 1828, being a daughter
of
Serril and Mary A. Miller Winchester. The father of Mrs. McCaslin
was born
in Hardin county, Ky, in 1804, and died in this county in 1854;
her mother
was born in North Carolina in 1803, and died in this county in 1867.
The
Winchester family came to Johnson County in 1826, and were among
the early
pioneers of this part of Indiana. To the union of Mr. and Mrs. McCaslin
are these seven chldren: David S., born 1853; Everett M., born 1855;
Josie,
born 1857; John H., born 1859; Florence, born 1861; Laura J., born
1863,
and Ezra W., born 1873. Politically, Mr. McCaslin is a republican,
and
he and family are members of the Presbyterian Church.

David McCaslin
Died at his residence one and a half mles west of the city on the

Mr. McCaslin was born in Mercer County, Kentucky, September 11th,
1797.
HIs father lived on Thompson Creek, Mercer County, and died there
leaving
a widow and six children, David being the second child in the family
and
only nine years of age at the time of this father's death. The family
moved
from Mercer County to the southern part of Indiana near Hanover,
in 1816
and in the year 1822 David married Miss Pollie Sellers of Scott
County,
Indiana. In the month of September, 1827, he came to the then wilds
of
Johnson County, and entered the farm on which he lived up to the
time of
his death. He at first entered an eighty acre tract of land, but
in the
course of time he purchased adjoining lands until he had in one
body 320
acres of good farming land, and by hard work and good management
accumulated
an abundance of this worlds goods, but was always counted an honest
and
upright man and was highly respected by all his neighbors. He united
with
the Presbyterian Church in Scott County and on coming to Johnson
County
united with the Church here in Franklin and at the time of his death
had
been a member of the Presbyterian Church for over fifty years.
His funeral was preached at his last residence on last Sunday afternoon
at 2 1/2 o'clock by Rev. S. E. Wishard, after which his remains
were
brought
to the Franklin Cemetery and placed in their final resting place.
Thus one by one are the settlers of Johnson County passing away.

J. R. MCCASLIN DIES AT FRANKLIN
John R. McCaslin, eighty-two years old, died at the
Masonic Home at Franklin,
at four o'clock Monday morning January 30th. The body
was brought to this city
to the Fletcher Dowd funeral parlor and funeral
services were held at the
Presbyterian Church, Wednesday afternoon, conducted by
the Rev. L. V Rule.
The burial took place in the Springer Cemetery at
Elizabethtown. Ritualistic
services were conducted by the Masonic Lodge.
John R. McCaslin was a resident of this city for many
years and during his
active years he was employed as section foreman on the
Pennsylvania Railroad.
After his retirement from the railroad he was elected
recorder of Jennings County
and served one term. About five years ago, after the
death of his daughter Miss
Mabel McCaslin, he entered the Masonic Home, but he
visited this city frequently
and retained legal residence here. He had a wide
circle of acquaintances and friends
and was beld in high esteem by all who knew him.
He is survived by one brother Bert McCaslin of
Monnett, MO; one sister Mrs. R. D.
Carson of Logansport; and one half sister, Mrs. Lizzie
Summers of Chillicothe, Ill.,
also by a number of nephews and nieces.
