of
Thomas "the settler" Curtis?
Joseph5 Curtis (Thomas4, James3, Isaac2, Thomas1), son of Thomas
Curtis and
Bridget Crandall, was born 16 February 1769 at Westerly, Washington
County,
Rhode Island. He married ca. 1789 Elsa Diadema Brockway, daughter
of Justus
Brockway and Alsa Gardner, at Stephentown, Rensselaer County, New
York. She
was born 30 June 1773 at Stephentown. Both Joseph Curtis and Elsa
Brockway
died ca. 1848. They are buried at Montrose, Lee
County, Iowa.
It should be noted that assembling this family is still a work in
process.
(This revision October 1997.) Mary Jane Curtis, a Utah descendant
of
Benjamin Gardner Curtis, had LDS records listing seven children
for Joseph,
Sr -- Loruhima, Mary Ann (Polly), Diadema, Benjamin Gardner, Uriah,
Louisa,
and Elsa Ann. Thomas Curtis, an Illinois descendant of Joseph Curtis,
Jr.,
had family records for Joseph, Jr. The real breakthrough on this
family came
in the fall of 1997, when it was "discovered" that there was another
record
of the children of Joseph Curtis, Sr., in possession of descendants
of
Simeon Brockway Curtis, who had settled in Iowa in 1851. This list
contained
12 names: Joseph, Jr., Rachel, Erastus, Simeon Brockway, Uriah,
Phoebe,
Elsie, Garner (sic), Barbara, Polly, Lauramer (sic), and Sarah.
Joseph Curtis, Jr., born 1790-91, was likely the eldest of the sons;
and it
was always understood by the Iowa people that Simeon Brockway, born
1811,
was the youngest of the family.
Joseph Curtis, Sr. would have been about about seven years old in
1776;
there is no record of service at the time of the Revolution. Joseph
married
at Stephentown, New York and (apparently) all of his children were
born
there.
It is not quite clear when Joseph moved to the Ohio country. "About
1818" is
an estimate. According to census records, Nelson7, son of Joseph,
Jr., was
born in New York State in 1816. Complicating matters, though, is
another
item of record; namely that the names of Joseph Curtis, Sr., and
Joseph
Curtis, Jr., are found together in poll books for Sprigg Township,
Adams
County, Ohio for the years 1810 and 1812. Adams County is just east
of Brown
County. So perhaps the move was made earlier; or perhaps it was
made in
steps.
"About 1818," then, Joseph, Sr. moved to Brown
County, Ohio. In the 1830's
he moved again to Cain Township, Fountain County, Indiana. In 1836
he
homesteaded land in section 18 of that township, near the settlement
of
Hillsboro. Joseph, Jr. homesteaded land nearby in section 20. Joseph,
Sr.
resided there until about 1840, when he moved to Nauvoo, Hancock
County,
Illinois.
He was baptised a Mormon and lived in Nauvoo when it was a Mormon
city. He
is shown in tax lists as living in Kimball's Addition in 1842 and
1844. He
received a Patriarchal Blessing at the hands of William Smith, Patriarch
to
the Church, in August, 1845.
According to LDS records he died in 1848, and is buried at Montrose,
Lee
County, Iowa. Elsa Diadema Brockway died the same year and is buried
at the
same place.
