 Duncan T./John D. Sellers/et al/Butler Co.AL
Hi,
I am a brand new subscriber to this list.  I need information about a
Duncan T. SELLERS who married Eliza Jane BROOKS in Butler County, Alabama
Mar. 1, 1869.  I believe his father was John D. Sellers on the 1850 Butler
Co. census:
70/70 John D. SELLERS 27 m farmer
Eliza   24 f
Duncan  5 m
Walter  3 m
[Eliza] Jane Brooks was the sister of my g-grandmother Sarah Angeline
Brooks HALL.  Her mother was Rachel PEAVY Brooks, 1811-1898, married to
Felix
Brooks, 1807-1850.  They are all buried in Sellers Cemetery near Georgiana,
Alabama. I'm hoping that learning about the Sellerses will lead me to info
on
the Brookses and Peavys.

Also, I need info on a Willie E. Sellers, who was married to my g-aunt
Sarah
Susan Victoria BLACK.  Willie was the son of James Richard Everett (J.R.E.)
Sellers
and Martha FAIRCLOTH. Looking for additions or corrections to my info.

Have no idea if John D. Sellers was related to J.R.E. Sellers.  Thanks for
any help or leads.

CHERYLL, thanks. (quess, I never sent this, msh)
You could send the census info on your FELIX BROOKS died BUTLER CO, AL
don't think we have a BROOKS chart.

This DUNCAN SELLERS was born 1790/1800? and died here ca 1856 with will and
kids named.

BUT, this BROOKS family may NOT connect to our SELLERS in BUTLER CO, AL till
AFTER they moved here in ? and married a SELLERS IN 1869?(so lived close?in
1860/70)

DO these SELLERS connect to SCHLEY/MARION CO, GA? where we have
SELLERS/DEVANES???
These SELLERS appear to connect to Sampson/Duplin Co, NC.

I can't see your/our AL/GA connection. Please send.

===============
Thanks, Marie,

I have only one census record for Felix BROOKS--1840--because he died
in 1850 before the 1850 census.

BROOKS, FELIX State: AL Year: 1840 County: Butler County Record Type:
Federal Population Schedule
Township: No Township Listed Page: 137 Database: AL 1840 Federal Census
Index
1m u5 [This male is listed as a female in 1850 census]
1m 30-40
1f u5
1 f 20-30

Felix was five dwellings from Dunkin SELLERS in 1840. The only other BROOKS
in Butler Co. in 1840 was Preston BROOKS, p. 165, twenty-eight pages away.

I'm only exploring the POSSIBILITY that Felix BROOKS (1807-1850) was related
to B. Duncan SELLERS (1796-1850s) BEFORE they arrived in Butler Co. Ala.
This possibility is based on two facts:

1. Felix BROOKS was buried in the SELLERS family graveyard in 1850, nineteen
years before his daughter married Duncan T. SELLERS, grandson of Benjamin
Duncan SELLERS. (Felix was buried there BEFORE Benjamin Duncan SELLERS).

2. Felix BROOKS was buried in 1850 Butler Co. Ala. in the same cemetery as
the grandson of the Benjamin SELLERS (1740-1817) who was the next door
neighbor of Edmond BROOKS in 1810 Horry Co. SC. (This seems like a MAJOR
coincidence if Felix BROOKS was NOT related to this Sellers or Brooks family
before 1850). This Edmond BROOKS married Rebecca SELLERS in 1806 in Horry
Co. SC, and Felix BROOKS was born in 1807.
Database: 1810 United States Federal Census

***Edmond BROOKS Not Stated County: Horry SC 1810 Page: 479 [married to
Rebecca SELLERS in 1806]

***Benj Sellers Not Stated, Horry, SC 1810 p. 479

As of now my interest is focused on the Edmond BROOKS-Rebecca SELLERS family
above (of Horry Co. SC in 1810). I'm hoping to determine if/how Rebecca
SELLERS BROOKS (1781NC-1856 Montgomery, AL) relates to Benjamin SELLERS
(1740-1817Brunswick Co. NC). She married Edmond BROOKS in 1806 in Horry Co.
SC, and Benjamin SELLERS was Edmond BROOKS' neighbor in 1810 Horry Co.
Rebecca Sellers Brooks named a son Luke BROOKS, so I'd like to learn more
about the Luke Sellers who died in Horry Co. in 1803 [see below].
(The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research Horry District
Administration Bonds 1803-1818 SCMAR, Vol. X, Winter 1982, No. 1--P. 8-- 29
August 1803, Benjamin SELLERS, admr. of Luke SELLERS; bond $300; Jordan
SELLERS, Wright SELLERS, sec. Elizabeth GRAHAM, wit. )
I don't know anything about the DEVANE or SELLERS family in Schley Co. GA
other than what I read in the Frank Devane article sent in to you.

I don't know of any connection between the SELLERS family of Butler Co. Ala.
to that of Schley Co. Ga.

I don't know of any Brooks-Devane connection (yet). I only know of a
connection between Felix DEVANE of Monroe Co. Ala. and the wife of Duncan
SELLERS of Butler Co. Ala. Felix DEVANE was a neighbor of Priscilla BROOKS
(widow of Benjamin BROOKS) and James SELLERS in 1840 Monroe Co. Ala.

A Samuel BROOKS who died in Butler Co. Ala. about 1864 (possibly/probably
relates to Felix BROOKS) had a son named Edmond BROOKS living in Schley Co.
Ga at that time. Samuel appears to relate to Brookses in GA before
1810--Jones Co. and Marion/Schley/Macon/Sumter/Taylor counties later.

The link to my page "Cheryll's page" on the Butler Co. Ala. page on your
site is not working. Do I need to re-send all my Sellers connections? I
thought I had sent a Brooks chart, but maybe not.

Thanks again.

Sorry, I've never heard of Abel SELLERS, but I noticed an A. H. SELLERS, MD,
on the Ramer Cemetery listing in my previous post. I'm assuming that is the
Anthony Hamilton SELLERS in your post. I've seen him listed as a brother of
Calvin King SELLERS, also born in Brunswick Co. NC. They were both in
Montgomery in 1850 (but A. H. was a teacher?) [See below].

**Joseph Y. 2

I posted the obituary of *Calvin King SELLERS and his son **Joseph Matthew
Young (J.M.Y.) SELLERS to the SELLERS site, and it's on the Butler Co. Ala.
page.

Calvin King SELLERS, although not my ancestor, is buried in Providence
Cemetery in Butler Co. Alabama, where many of my ancestors/relatives are
buried. I didn't know until recently that he probably relates to the other
Sellers families I research in Butler Co. Although I don't know exactly
how, I believe he connects to the Benjamin Sellers who died in 1817 in
Brunswick Co. NC (if same one, was in Horry Co. SC in 1810). I believe that
Benjamin SELLERS was a Methodist minister, and I know Calvin King SELLERS
had some sons who were Methodist ministers.

I recently discovered that Benjamin SELLERS' neighbor in 1810 Horry Co. SC
was Edmond BROOKS who was married to a Rebecca SELLERS. Their son, Luke
BROOKS, subject of my previous post--also in District 2 in Montgomery in
1850--was also a Methodist minister, and your Dr. A. H. SELLERS is buried in
the same cemetery (Ramer in Montgomery) as Rebecca SELLERS BROOKS and
several of her kinfolks.

Let me know if you find Abel's connection to any of these people.

Here's the problem: The histories I've read say that THIS is Benjamin Duncan
SELLERS, son of Wright, in 1830 in Lowndes Co, not the one on the same page
with Wright in Pike Co.Ala..:

Hello Cheryll Sumner,
The James Sellers in the 1830 Census of Pike County, Alabama, page 28, I
believe to be James Sellers, 60-70 and his wife Elizabeth, with their son
Joseph Sellers and his family, who had moved from North Carolina, before 1819.

Yes, even though it's not an exact match, I think it's close enough. I
tried three spellings, but didn't try SELARS and forgot to try B. D. in the
first name spot.
I gave up too easily. You really know your soundex spellings! I really
appreciate your help.
Thanks very much.
Cheryll

Thank you. This is James Richard Everett Sellers. He moved to from Pike

Hello, Sellers Researchers,

I dropped off the Sellers mailing list a few years ago due to personal issues, mostly lack of time.
Now I'm back.

My interest in the Sellers family stems from my Brooks research. My gg-gf Felix Brooks (1807-1850) is buried in Sellers Cemetery in Butler Co., Alabama. Felix's daughter, Eliza Jane Brooks, married Duncan Thomas Sellers in 1869 in Butler Co., Alabama. Duncan T. Sellers was the son of John D. (Duncan?) Sellers and Eliza Ann Gallaway. John D. Sellers was the son of Duncan Sellers and Elizabeth A. Cromartie. Many have listed the Duncan Sellers married to Elizabeth Cromartie and buried in Sellers Cemetery as Benjamin Duncan Sellers, but I have never found an actual document saying his first name was Benjamin. He was just Duncan on the censuses and on his estate record. At some point in the past someone added a new and modern tombstone to his grave in Sellers Cemetery that shows his name as Benjamin Duncan Sellers. Many genealogies on line have him listed as the son of Wright Sellers, son of Benjamin Sellers (1740-1817) of Brunswick Co., NC, to Georgetown and Horry Distri! ct of SC. Some have given this Benjamin Sellers the first name William.

Back in 2005 I posted to this list my "theory" that the Duncan Sellers in Sellers Cemetery might not be Wright's son because a Benjamin D. (B. D.) Sellers (whose middle name may or may not be Duncan) was close to Wright Sellers in Pike County, Alabama, in 1830, while Duncan Sellers was in Lowndes Co., Alabama, in 1830. The B. D. (Benjamin D.) Sellers of Pike Co. and Barbour Co., Ala. (1830-1850's) with a first wife named Malinda and a second wife named Mary Jane Tullos (m. 1873) ended up in Clarke Co. (1860) and Copiah Co., Mississippi (1870 and 1880). The Duncan Sellers of Lowndes (1830) and Butler Co., Alabama (1840 and 1850) died in Butler Co. in the 1850's and is buried in Sellers Cemetery in Butler Co.

I want the Duncan Sellers in Sellers Cemetery to belong to Wright and Benjamin Sellers because of the Edmond Brooks living near them in 1810 in Horry Co., SC. That Edmond Brooks is possibly the father of my Felix Brooks. Edmond Brooks was married to Rebecca Sellers in 1806 in Horry Co., SC, by Rev. Benjamin Sellers. The relationship of Rebecca Sellers to Benjamin Sellers is unclear. Edmond and Rebecca Brooks left Horry Co. in the 1830's and moved to Pike Co., Alabama, and were on the 1840 census there. Edmond Brooks died in 1844. In 1850, the widowed Rebecca Brooks was living next to her son Luke Brooks in Montgomery, Montgomery Co., Alabama. Since I can find no real evidence that Rebecca Sellers Brooks was the daughter of Benjamin Sellers (other than Benjamin's proximity and official presence at two Brooks weddings--hers and her son's), I believe that she could have been Rebecca, widow of Benjamin's son Luke Sellers, who died in 1803. When Rebecca Sellers married Ed! mond Brooks in 1806, Edmond was likely living next to Benjamin Sellers as he was in 1810. Edmond might have needed a wife to take care of his young son, Evan(t) Brooks, by his first marriage, and Rebecca might have needed a father for her young son Jacob.

In a Bounty Land Application in 1855 in Montgomery, Alabama, Rebecca Brooks stated

"... she married Edmond Brooks in Horry District SC on the 17th day of July, 1806 by one Benja. Sellers, a minister of the Gospel, and that her name before her said marriage was Rebecca Sellers; that her husband had died at home in Pike Co. Ala. on the 14th day of August 1844 and that she is now a widow and that she has no record of the marriage."

She did not say Sellers was her maiden name, and by all accounts I've read, Benjamin Sellers had no daughter named Rebecca, so I think it's possible she was a Sellers because of a previous marriage to Luke Sellers. Some researchers have listed Jacob Marion Sellers (Benjamin's grandson) as the child of Wright Sellers and Miss Duncan, but I think he could have been the child of Luke and Rebecca Sellers. A Jacob M. Sellers and Luke Brooks had sequential land document numbers for land bought in Pike County, Alabama, in 1839 in the same township and range. Maybe they were half brothers instead of first cousins. Just a thought.

Anyway, I have not yet proven that Edmond Brooks and Rebecca Sellers were parents of my Felix Brooks, BUT I now have DNA proof that Edmond and Felix Brooks were related. Combine that with the fact that Felix Brooks is buried in Sellers Cemetery not far from Duncan Sellers and Elizabeth Cromartie, and it would all tie up into a neat little package IF the Duncan Sellers in Sellers Cemetery was the son of Wright, son of Benjamin. Unfortunately, I cannot ignore the Benj. D. Sellers who was closer to Wright Sellers in 1830 and equally good, if not better, to be a candidate for son of Wright and grandson of Benjamin.

Soooo...
If Duncan Sellers of Butler Co. was NOT the son of Wright Sellers, who WAS Duncan's father?

This is all very complicated and so easy to get wrong. If anyone can help with any corrections, concrete information, sources, or documents that I'm missing, I'd appreciate hearing from you.
