I'm researching a (sort of) northern Indiana Sellers family which came
from
Berks Co, PA.  Judy Stubbs posted the PA info (Frederick Sellers, f/o
Kerlin Baker Sellers) a couple of months ago.  Here's the IN info:

Indiana -- WELLS Co, SELLERS (1870):
Kerlan (Kerlin Baker), 47
Eliza, 35
Richard, 22
Catherine, 17
Harriet, 16
William J., 11
Ella, 7
Wilson, 3

Indiana -- WELLS Co, SELLERS (1880):
K.B., 56
Eliza, 4_
Richard, 31
Ella, 17
Wilson, 14
Robert, 8
Charles, 6
Frederick, 4

Richard, Katherine and Harriet were children of KB and his first wife,
Matilda S. Kline (d/o Philip Kline; b1825 Berks Co-d1856 Wells Co).

One of KB and Matilda's daughters, Hattie Ringler, later lived in BERKS
Co
while her sister, Kate Acton Mumford, stayed in Indiana.

KB and Eliza's children went their separate ways:
William J(ohnston) Sellers's children by his first marriage included a
son,
Harvey B., possibly a silver miner who may have lived in WA state in the
1920 or 30s and later (1930s-1940s) lived in Cincinnati OH.

William moved to St. Joseph, MO, and raised a second family, according
to
the 1910 BUCHANAN Co census: William J., 51; Eleanor, 39; Fay, 17;
Eugene,
15; and Owen, 12.

Elza Wilson, Laura Ellen and Charles Edgar stayed in WELLS Co; Frederick
G.
was a fireman in ALLEN Co; Robert M. moved to ELKHART Co and had sons
John,
Wayne and Bruce.

Marilyn, in your archive message, I don't remember seeing which counties
are
of interest to you.  I have unconfirmed bits and pieces (aka clues) on:
Dr. John S. Sellers, Blackford Co. (s/o Isaac of KY), and John's son,
Dr.
Charles A. Sellers, Madison Co.; on
George Sellers (1850 Huntington Co); on
George Ira Sellers (1884-?) and his family's kitchen cabinet business in
Madison Co (where it moved from Howard Co).  The latter's father is
listed
as Alfred P. Sellers; and on
Rev. Robert Sellers of Johnson and Madison counties,
s/o Nelson Sellers s/o Samuel Sellers.

Also believe I saw the surname Lindley in one of your messages:
Interesting
coincidence, one of KB Sellers's brother's given name probably was
Lindley...

Oh well, enough!  If you (or anyone else on the list) see connections
here,
I'd love to hear from you.

The earlier post seems to be locked inside my old computer, but here's
additional information on KB Sellers (1824-1911),
leading from WELLS CO, IN, back to BERKS CO, PA:

Bluffton (WELLS CO, IN) EVENING NEWS, 5 June 1911:
Kerlin B. Sellers, 87
b 3 June 1824, BERKS CO, PA,  s/o M/M Frederick Sellers
came from PA early 1840s
[probably 1850, based on census, land & other sources]
w/ 1st wife, Matilda Kline...
m/2 Eliza Miller
"...none of his brothers or sisters survive, his last brother
having passed away three years ago in Pennsylvania...."

1860 ROCKCREEK TWP, WELLS CO, IN:
SELLERS, Kerlon B., 34, farmer, PA
Eliza, 21, OH
Richard, 12, PA
Catharine, 8, IN
Harriet, 6, IN
William J., 10/12, IN

Reading (BERKS CO, PA) ADLER, 25 March 1856:
Obituaries: Matilda Sellers, 30, wife of Carl of Wells Co, IA(sic), and d/o
deceased Philip Klein of Rehrersburg, PA.

1850 TULPEHOCKEN TWP, BERKS CO, PA:
SELLERS, Kerlin, 25, laborer, PA
Matilda, 23, PA
Richard, 2, PA
Eliza, 5/12, PA
(this entry is second for 231-269; my notes are unclear at this point
but indicate that on the census MF, I was unable to
read the names of the other family.)

Reading (BERKS CO, PA) ADLER, 11 May 1847:
Marriages: Carl Zeller of Marion (twp) and Matilda Klein of Rehrersburg

Since I have not worked on this information for several years,
it is in a bit of disarray.  I have great hopes now for getting
back to the search and filling in some gaps....

Greetings Sellers Researchers,

If anyone has additional information on the William Johnston Sellers
(b1859 IN - resided MO - d.?) or his family listed below, I would love
hearing from you.

I would especially like to know about his oldest son, Harvey (middle
initial B.?) Sellers (b1879 IN - d1945-1955 possibly OH).

The 1910 Missouri census lists a Harvey Sellers, age 21 (b. May 1879
IN), as a single farm laborer residing with the John W. Graves family
in Atchison Co MO, a few houses away from WJS and his second wife.

Harvey's mother, the former Mary Shively, died in 1909 in Indiana and
he signed court papers in early 1910.  He was reported not found for
final distribution in late 1910.  A 1912 city directory in Bluffton,
Wells Co IN, lists Harvey as a silver miner; he is residing with his
grandmother, Eliza Miller Sellers.  The WWI civilian draft
registration lists a Harvey Sellers, b. 10 May 1880, registering in
Ketchikan, Alaska, with relatives living in St. Joseph MO.

As a child, I heard Harvey and Grace (his wife) mentioned from time to
time.  Apparently they had no children.  I seem to recall that they
may have resided at one time in Washington or Oregon.  I have not
located where they were married and do not know where she was from.

My parents saved a note from them when I was born.  Grace sent funds
for the burial of Harvey's brother in 1955 from Cincinnati, OH.  He
does not appear to be in the SSDI.  She could be the Grace Sellers
(1893-1976 Dayton) in SSDI but I have not done the follow up yet.
Another Grace Sellers (b.1876-d.1955 in Cincinnati) does not appear to
be her.

While the names Harvey and Grace both appear in the Cincinnati OH
directories and in newspaper files, none so far seems identifiable as
this particular couple.  One or possibly two Harveys in the
directories has a middle initial W; he is listed with an Elsie G. or
Eliz.  They do not appear on voter registration lists.

Two possibles for Harvey's half-brothers also appear in SSDI.  Again I
have not done follow up.  Since there are long stretches between my
research forays, I wonder if anyone on the list knows more about these
folks and would share.

WJS was a brother of my grandfather who died six months before my
father was born.  They were sons of Kerlin Baker Sellers (b1824 Berks
Co PA - d1911 Wells Co IN) and grandsons of Frederick Sellers (c
1786-1864 PA).  Additional information is on my Web pages, address
below my signature.

--, Eugene, son, WM, bDec 1894, 5, MO IN IA.
--, Owen, son, WM, bFeb 1898, 2, MO IN IA.

Newspaper obituaries in IN indicate that the family was in St. Joe by
June 1911 and still there in 1923.  WJS appears with many variations
on his name, including John W.  Any information on these families
would be appreciated.

Subject:
SELLERS as miners: Chronology/IN, MO, AK, OH

        From:
             Charlotte Sellers <csellers@hsonline.net>

Thanks Marie,

Going over this again, I found some information I had forgotten to
follow up on & now will do so.  Still, clues of where else to look are
welcome.  Perhaps someone has found a piece irrelevant to their search
that would help here or knows something about these families -- from
oral tradition or otherwise.

Thanks for letting me struggle through this on the list.  It has
helped to clarify some things, especially Joscelyn's information that
helped eliminate one family.  I know the following chronology is long
but perhaps someone will recognize something.

Is anyone familiar with JOSEPH (F.?) SELLER in Alaska in 1903?

HARVEY SELLERS appears to have been a miner in Alaska in the early
1900s, after living in Indiana and Missouri.  He & wife GRACE SELLERS
apparently spent their last years in Cincinnati, Ohio.  I've wanted to
know his story since I was a child ...

Harvey Sellers' ancestry as I know it:

1. Frederick Sellers (abt.1786-1864 PA)
1.7 Kerlin Baker Sellers (1824 Berks Co PA-1911 Wells Co IN)
1.7.7 William Johnston Sellers (1859 Wells Co IN-aft. 1934 prob.MO)
1.7.7.1 Harvey Sellers (abt. 1880 Wells Co IN-aft.1945 & before 1955
poss.OH)

Neither Harvey (H.W.) nor Grace appear to be in the SSDI, based on the
informaton I have. Highest on the wish list are obituaries for Harvey
and/or Grace Sellers.  Perhaps someone may have come across their
names in a cemetery record or wherever.

Also would like to find obits for WILLIAM JOHNSTON SELLERS and his
second family (wife Mattie/Eleanor ---, b.abt 1870; dtr FAY, b.abt
1894; son EUGENE, b.abt 1895; son OWEN, b.abt 1898), last known in
MO.

William Johnston Sellers' name appears in records as JOHN W. SELLERS,
WM. J. SELLERS, JOHNSTON SELLERS and other variations.

Here is the chronology:

1860 & 1870: WILLIAM J. SELLERS, 10 mo. & then 11 yrs old, is listed
with his father, Kerlin Baker Sellers, in Rockcreek Twp, Wells Co IN.

1879: WILLIAM J. SELLERS and MARY SHIVELY married in January,
according to court documents filed in 1887.

1880: HARVEY SELLERS born. WJS no longer with Kerlin Baker Sellers
family.  Need to check Huntington Co IN for marriage (her parents just
across county line) and recheck census.

1887: Court documents say WILLIAM J. SELLERS & MARY SHIVELY separated
in June 1885.  He retained custody of their three children:  Harvey 7,
Gertie 5, & William 2.

1890: The court commits Mary Shively Sellers to a state hospital.

1892: From the 1900 and 1910 Missouri censuses it appears that WILLIAM
J. SELLERS and Mattie/Eleanor --- were married, possibly in Iowa (her
birth state) or Missouri.

1892 or 1893:  Gertrude Sellers, age 10 or 11, dies in Wells
Co IN & JOHNSTON SELLERS signs burial order.

1900:  JOHN W. SELLERS, 40; wife Mattie, 30, & children Fay 6, Eugene
5, & Owen 2  (Dwelling/House 40) live near HARVEY SELLERS, 21, farm
laborer with the John W. Graves family (Dwelling/Family 25) in East
Clark Twp, Atchison Co MO on June 2.

1900:  H.W. SELLERS at Vancouver BC on June 7 on scow heading up Yukon
River for Dawson City gold fields.  (Can this be Harvey, 21, farm
laborer in MO on June 2? Or is one date or the other slightly
fudged by a record keeper?)

1903:  H.W. SELLERS, miner, listed in Dawson City, AK, directory.
(Must write for any additional information available there.)  Also
listed: SELLER JOSEPH F., Yd foreman, Ladue Co. (Residing in East
Clark Twp, Atchison Co MO on June 8 1900 was JOSEPH ZELLER, 35, single
farm laborer who as a 4-year-old came to the US from Austria.  Did he
also get gold fever? But entering AK in Sept 1899 was J.F. SELLAS
...?)

1905-1913:  Commitment proceedings underway in court for BILLY
SELLERS, grandson of Kerlin Baker Sellers and Eliza Sellers (& son of
William Johnston Sellers).  In late 1912 HARVEY SELLERS petitions the
court to have his brother declared of unsound mind.

1906: Buchanan Co MO city directory shows a WILLIAM SELLERS in
Washington Twp, St. Joseph Rural Route 6.

1909:  MARY SHIVELY SELLERS dies in a state hospital in IN. Harvey and
his brother Billy (also a resident of the state hospital) as the only
heirs ask that the estate buy tombstones for their mother and for
their sister.  HARVEY SELLERS signs receipts for estate funds in late
1909 and early 1910 in Wells Co IN.

1910: HARVEY SELLERS does not appear in the 1910 census near his
father's family and the court reports that he cannot be found for
final distribution of his mother's estate in late 1910.  Did I miss
him in Wells Co IN? Or was he in Alaska, on the west coast, or ...?

1910 US census, Washington Twp, St. Joseph city, Buchanan Co MO:
WM. J. SELLERS, b.IN, 51, with wife Eleanor 39 & children Fay 17,
Eugene 15, & Owen, 12.

1912: HARVEY SELLERS, silver miner, in the Bluffton, Wells Co
IN city directory.

1918: HARVEY SELLERS, b. 10 May 1880, registers for the WWI draft in
Ketchikan, Alaska, and has relative in St. Joseph, MO.

1920: Need to do census work.  IN? MO? OH? HARVEY SELLERS not in AK
soundex, but in my haste, did I look for H.W.?

1911, 1923 and 1934 newspaper obituaries in Indiana report that
WILLIAM JOHNSTON SELLERS (by various listings) is residing in or near
St. Joseph, MO.

1931-1932: HARVEY SELLERS, laborer, listed in Cincinnati city
directory. No mention of Grace.  Not listed 1933-34.  HARVEY W.
SELLERS appears in 1935-6-7.

1938: HARVEY W. SELLERS is listed in Cincinnati with ELSIE G.
SELLERS.  (Does this indicate possible date of marriage?  In
Cincinnati?  Does the G. stand for GRACE?  Did the Sellers in Indiana
know her as Grace while she went by Elsie in Ohio?)

1939-42:  HARVEY W. SELLERS continues to be listed in Cincinnati as a
laborer or driver residing with Elsie or Elsie G.  A Mrs. Elsie
Sellers also is listed all those years, at least as far back as 1931,
mostly as an employee of Graeter's confectionary with the business
address listed.

1943:  The only HARVEY W. SELLERS listed is a salesman and has been
identified by his daughter Joscelyn as definitely living in Cincinnati
in late 1942 and more than half of 1943.

1944:  The 1943 HARVEY W. SELLERS (with ELIZ.) still appears in the
directory and HARVEY W. SELLERS (with ELSIE), a driver, is back.  Only
the latter appear in 1945 and 1947 (no 1946 directory available).

1947: News story about a traffic crash tells about a Mrs. Harvey
Sellers but she appears to have resided in Cleves rather than
Cincinnati and has no obvious connection to the other families.

1948 & 1949:  No Harvey (but in 1948 three Harry Sellers where two had
been listed).  Elsie still is listed at the confectionary.  No 1950
directory available.

1951:  ELSIE SELLERS is listed as widow of HARVEY.  Residing at same
address is Mrs. CHELSIE KING.  No Elsie listed for confectionary.

1952-54: ELSIE SELLERS, widow of HARVEY, living alone.

1955: No Elsie nor Grace as widow; Elsie M. Sellers listed at
confectionary address.  The latter possibly is the Elsie M. Sellers
(1891-1966) listed in the SSDI.

1956: HARVEY (ELSEY) SELLERS, mach, is listed in Cincinnati
directory.  (aaargh!)

1957: None of the relevant names are listed in Cincinnati directory.

1945-1955: Sometime during this period, Grace Sellers reports death of
HARVEY SELLERS (age 65-75?) to other family members and sends jewelry
that had belonged to him.  Did not see obvious obituary/cemetery
listings for either.

1955:  BILLY SELLERS, s/o William Sellers and Mary Shively, dies in
state hospital where he resided 44 years and is buried in Wells Co
IN.  GRACE SELLERS of Cincinnati, OH, sends funds for burial of
William Sellers in April.

1955: GRACE SELLERS, widowed, b.28 January 1876 d.30 December 1955
buried Oak Hill Cemetery, Glendale Village, Springfield Twp, Hamilton
Co OH.  (If this is Harvey's widow, where is his grave and where has
Grace been all those years in the directories?)

That's the last I have about the families. I'd like to fill in some of
the missing years.  Thanks for slogging through all this ...
