My GG grandfather was Amariah Sellers from the Taylors Bridge area of Duplin/Sampson Co. NC. He was born about 1845 enlisted in the civil war in 1861 then moved to Duval Co. Florida after the was and married my GG Grandmother Rebeccah Moore. He died in about 1904 in Duval Co. Florida. I would like to know who Amariah's parents were. Family documents call his father "Jerdin" but I can find no evidence of such a person. I have also found a will for the Merritt family in NC that references Amariah as a grandchild. Does anyone have additional info. on this family? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

BARBARA, thanks, LOTS of scanning and sending. Appreciate.

ALL appear to come thro good. and much easier for me to follow.

ONLY thing I see is the witness of Amariah Sellers, =
James D.Rackley, (civil war also) which I believe is the son of
Elizabeth  Merritt Rackley's son James D. Rackley as a witness!!

And this Elizabeth Merritt Rackley is sister of Jane Merritt SELLERS

It appears that a S. W. WILLIAMS was a witness, but, above file copied over top.?
I have Never seen original with copy over?

WHAT did you see?

Marie:

I know it's exasperating, but  that's the way that the file was
coppied into the Florida archives.  So you're seeing exactly what I saw.  I did not make the connection between Rackley & Jane Merrit though.  Thanks for the tidbit.  Do you perceive that as another indicator that Jane was indeed Amariah's mother?

==============

BARBARA, thanks.

We/I have worked some on these families, but NO PROVEN parents .

Do you have complete will copies and probate papers? (we/I only have
extractions) WOULD like to see ALL papers of same.
Do you have Civil War info? Did he /her draw a pension? Relation may be witness.

I believe we know he is a son of JANE OR ANN MERRITT SELLERS. And a Grandson of Daniel and Mary Murfree MERRITT.

Is Daniel a son or brother of JACOB MERRITT where he was married in 1801 with ABRAHAM SELLERS attending? (Rev War files of Daniel Merritt)
I believe we have Two in 1800 Sampson Co., NC, one older.
And I don't have a chart on either one. Do you?

What census extractions do you have =

Also, need Amariah SELLERS kids names and where they went and married. I believe I saw most to 1900? except 1870?

WE will help where we can, but, haven't followed thro enough OR just ran out of info. I do have land records of Sampson/Duplin which I haven't extracted MERRITT info. Do you have? Most of mine before 1800/ etc.

I have NOT been in contact with MERRITT families for several years, they may have new info? When did you check?

Send what you can. And Thanks for sharing SELLERS.

1860 Sampson County, North Carolina
Amariah Sellers, 19, M, farm laborer, $4,000/$3,125, NC
living with Mary Merritt, 85, F, NC

This Mary Merritt was probably the grandmother of Amariah Sellers, which
would make his mother's maiden name Merritt.

Thank you for your help. I do have this census extract. Mary Merritt was Amariah's Grandmother, Daniel Merritt was his Grandfather, but I'm not sure if his mother the Merritt's daughter Ann or Jane. What was his father's name? Do you have any additional info?

I looked at the 1840 Sampson County, North Carolina census and there is a
James? Sellers which is indexed as Jane Sellers living next door to Daniel
Merritt.
This Daniel Merritt is 70 and under 80 years (1761-1770)of age with only a
female 50 to 59 years of age .

This James Sellers is 40 and under 50 (1791-1800) with a wife 30 and under
40 ( 1801-1810). They have 2 sons under age 5, 2 sons under 15, and 1 son
15 and under 20. There are many Merritts on this same page.

BARBARA, I am kinda wondering if you rec'd my letter below and perhaps you replied and I deleted ?
Need some answers or Any info you have on ANY family members.

Amariah's father was "Jerdin" Sellers. This information comes from a family bible. We have no other info. on Jerdin, except that he lived in Sampson/ Duplin Co. in the Taylors Bridge area. It is possible, but unproven that "Jerdin" was a nick-name for Everett Sellers. Amariah's mother was either Jane or Ann Merritt. We believe Jane as she and Amariah are listed as heirs in her mother, Mary Merrit's will of 1861 with Amariah being described as a grandchild and Jane being described as the widow of Everitt Sellers. Both Jane & Ann were daughters of Daniel and Mary Murfree Merritt. Daniel, Amariah's maternal grandfather fought in the Revolutionary war.

Amariah was:

Born 8/2/1846 in Sampson County N.C.

Enlisted 6/10/1861 giving an age of 19 when in fact he was 2 months shy of his 15th birthday.
Was a farmer

Married 10/7/1871 Rebecca Moore in Jacksonville Fl. They had eight children. His wife,Rebecca was the daughter of John Moore & Mary Miller and was born in Duval Co. Fl. 5/1853 and died there 1/9/1944. She is buried in the Seller's Cemetary on Halsema Rd. in Whitehouse in Duval County Fl.

Amariah died 3/5/1905 in Duval Co. Fl. and is buried there in the Seller's Cemetary
I will also send you an e-mail of the pension file if I can. If it is too large I'll transfer it to a disc & mail it to you. What is your address?

I'm excited to be able to share this information with you. Amariah had a cousin Daniel Sellers, also from Sampson Co. that enlisted the same day that he did. If you come across any info. on him, please share with me. It may help to unravel the knot of exactly who Amariah's parents were. Also please feel free to share my info. with anyone that may benefit.

Thanks,
