I have William C. Oates' civil war book right here - borrowed
it from my
brother to read about an ancestor - James Hamilton Metcalf. In the
biographical notes, there is no mention of the names of Oates' parents,
much less grandparents.
In the Clark Watters' Sellers book, the article on William Calvin Oates
states that "he is the son of William and Sarah Sellers Oats, the former
being a native of South Carolina who moved to Montgomery in 1828, and soon after
to Pike Co., where he became a planter and married in 1854; grandson of
Stephen Oates and Elizabeth Shipps and of Matthew Sellers and Jane Ward and a
descendant of Irish and French ancestors on the maternal side and of Welsh
ancestors on the paternal side. Stephen Oates was born in North Carolina
in 1878 and died in 1836." Author states that information, other than birth
and death dates, given by Charles Rufus Sellers, by Curra Bell Faulk, and from
a paper placed in the Sellers file in the Alabama Department of Archives and
History, Montgomery, by Cornelia Selers Bean. Also, material was used from
Thomas McAdory owens, Story of Alabama, A History of the State, Vol I, pp.

Thomas was my ggg-grandfather. I have unverified
information that his parents names were Simeon Sellers
and Martha Hewitt. Thomas first married Finetta
Braxton and lived in Holmes County, Florida. They had
four girls. She died in the 1860's and he then
remarried Millie Andrews and lived in Red Level, AL,
they had a girl and a boy. I have all of the names and
dates if you are interested. I also have several
pictures of him.
