Dear Ms Summer,
The Sellars/Devane family in the aforementioned message is indeed not
part of your family. I have considerable knowledge of the "Butler County"
Sellars. The Frank Devane of the story is Francis Marion Devane. He is the
son of John and Eliza Sellars Devane of Ellaville, Ga. Eliza is my
ggrandfather's sister (David William Sellars) The Brooks buried in
the
Sellers Cemetery is of the sizeable Brooks family from around Owassa, Al.
Some of their descendants are known to me. James Richard Sellars

Thank you. This is James Richard Everett Sellers. He moved to from Pike
Co. Alabama to Butler Co. Alabama and then to Escambia
Co. Alabama where he
died (buried in Huxford Cemetery). His son Willie Sellers married my g-aunt
Vick Black. I have further info on him and his family if anyone wants it.
Some is already posted on the Butler Co. Alabama page of the Sellers site
(mabe under Cheryll's page?).

Duncan Sellers and would like information on Lewis's family.
Thanks.

Hi Grant: I understand that Jacob Jonstons's wife was Priscilla Prescott
Johnston, born 1768. They moved to Monroe, in Perry
Co. Ms. He died in
1825, and supposely they both are buried in Butler Co. I have that
Priscilla
sold her land & moved to her daughters who was a Mrs. Nickles/Mickles,
living in nearby Butler Co. until her death in 1843. My Spicey Johnson
who m. lst James Sellers, then John Jonas Gandy might be brother to James
Patton who m. Charity Ducksworth and 2nd to Widow Gibson.
I have never been able to verify this information, just pasted on

Hope we can find some connections, and am willing to share my info. with

D. *G. Sellers Dead [my note: *This should read D. T. Sellers]
Mr. D. G.*[T] Sellers died suddenly last Tuesday morning. He has
been in
bad health for some weeks, but was up and around a short time before his
death.
"Uncle Dunk," as he was known by all, was one of the oldest
native citizens
of this section. He was born 75 years ago [Duncan T. Sellers was born
in
1844] in south Butler six or seven miles from Georgiana and has lived around
Georgiana all his life. He used to like to tell how he hunted deer and other
game in the forests now where Georgiana stands. He was a veteran of
the
civil war and did valiant service under General Bragg, of the Western Army.
He was a member of the Methodist church and the Masonic fraternity of
which
he was held in high esteem.
He is survived by a wife and two sons, Ellis [Ennis?] of Georgiana, and
Joe
of Pensacola, Fla.
Burial services were conducted by Rev. B.M. Herlong. Burial was at
Sellers
graveyard, under the auspices of the Masonic lodge. A large concourse
gathered at the cemetery to pay their last tribute to this worthy man.
[from the Butler County News, Thursday, June 12, 1919]
*Duncan T. Sellers has the death date 10 June 1919 on his tombstone at
Sellers Cemetery, so this obit is a match for him.

Hi,
I've done a little bit of research on the Sellers
family. My g-aunt
Vick Black married Willie Sellers (see below), and there are
other Sellers
connections to my family. Sorry, I don't have JRE's
father's name yet. I
know two places to look--just haven't done it yet. There's
a file cabinet
drawer in the Greenville Public Library Gen. Room full of
Sellers research
done by Jean Sellers. Also, I believe there might be some
info on this
family in a book about Escambia County, AL by Annie Waters.
Some of what I
have gathered and typed is below.
The Elizabeth Sellers you referred to on the 1880
Butler Co. Census, I
believe, is Elizabeth Talbot, wife of Calvin (L. or E. or
K.) Sellers. An
unidentified handwritten note in the Sellers file in the
Greenville Library
said that Calvin was born in Brunswick Co. NC Nov. 20, 1818
and died June 23,
1886 in Butler Co. Note also said that Calvin and Elizabeth
had 12 children,
including JMY, George, and Angus.
I know that this same Calvin is buried at the
Providence Methodist
Church in Butler County (I did a census of it) and served as
a private in the
3rd BN CSA. JRE Sellers' s grandson Calvin Murdock Sellers
is also buried at
Providence Cemetery. I believe I posted obits for the older
Calvin and his
son JMY on the Butler Co. Web Site.

Vick's first husband, Willie, died between 1895-1900.
Uncle Carbie said that Aunt Vick (who lived near Georgiana)
used to be
somewhat proud of the fact that she had never in her whole
life traveled
farther away than Greenville. He said she had a big,
healthy laugh. He told
a story about the day he and Walter Holloway hid behind a
tree and threw
hickory nuts at Aunt Vick and her front porch guest, Zack
Powell.
In Memoriam MRS. VICTORIA HOLOWAY
This section was greatly shocked on Saturday morning, June
21, when the death
angel visited the Holoway home and took the wife and mother.
She suffered but a few hours, having fell from the front
doorsteps about 5:30
Friday afternoon and died at 1:15 Saturday morning, without
regaining
consciousness.
No truer words have been spoken of anyone than of her, when
saying her loved
ones were numbered by her acquaintances, which were many as
was shown by the
large gathering of friends and relatives for the funeral
service.
We know she has gone to be with the redeemed. Such lives
never end. The veil
is drawn by the unseen hand; they are lost from view for
only a little while.
Just an angel form walks over the earth with silent tread
and becons away
our loved ones and then we calI them "dead."
True as a wife, tender loving and patient as a mother,
helpful and never
failing as a neighbor.
May our goal be to live more like her and thus prepare to
meet her "over
there."
Born in the community in which she died, and where she had
lived all of her
68 years and one day except for a few months.
She united with the Baptist Church at Mt. Pisgah in 1890.
She was married to Willie Sellers in 1889, who died some
years later. To this
union was born two children, Cleveland Sellers, now of Long
Beach, Calif.,
and Martha Sellers Goodwin of Foley, Ala.
She later was married to Thomas Holoway, who survives her.
To this union was
born one son, Walter Holoway, now in Orlando, Fla.
Besides these she is survived by 11 grandchildren, two
great-grandchildren
and one sister, Mrs. Bethena Morrow, four brothers, J. E.,
H. N, and G. R.
Black of Georgiana, and L. B. Black of Jackson, Tenn., and a
host of other
relatives.
Funeral was conducted by Rev. Eiland, at Morrow School
House. Pall bearers
were six of her nephews: Ansel, Herston, Gillis and Felix
Black, Willie Mac
and Roy Morrow.
One has gone whose presence we miss; your place on earth can
never be filled;
your life a beacon on our pathway shall be. Thus your noble
life an example
we will follow.

Mary, I have some interest in the surname STUART, but first this: I
found
(gg) Uncle Dunk (Duncan Thomas) SELLERS and his second wife, your g-aunt
Martha "Mattie" PALMER on the 1900 Butler Co. Census living in
Georgiana.
With them were Ennis SELLERS, age 23, (son of Dunk and his first wife, my
gg-aunt Eliza Jane BROOKS) and his half-brother, Joe SELLERS, age 9, (son of
Dunk and Mattie). Also in Georgiana in 1900 was an Eliza SELLERS, age
82,
born in 1817, enumerated with her son, Leonodus COHRON. I was
wondering
which SELLERS she married (trying to find if/how she relates to Uncle Dunk).
I know nothing about the surname COHRON.
My g-aunt Sarah Brooks HALL (niece of Eliza Jane BROOKS SELLERS) married
first in 1905 a John Nathan STUART, son of L. C. STUART and Sarah Ann
PARKER. Do you know if your STUART was related to John Nathan STUART?
John had a sister named Nola STUART GRIFFIN and a daughter named Clara by a
previous marriage.

Thanks for responding to my query. Yes, I made a mistake
reading the census, and now that you've told
me his middle name is Gabriel, I see that the E is really a G. Also, his
son's name appears to be Lewis
G., Jr. (on second look). I appreciate the correction. Now that you've
given me his correct middle initial,
I've found him in the censuses of 1920 and 1930 living in McKenzie. Is
this his family in 1880?

Do you know if Lewis Gabriel Sellers went by the name

Yes, you have the correct family for "Uncle Gabe". Almost
all his family are buried at Pleasant Hill
Cemetery, outside McKenzie. You can access those records on the internet
under "McKenzie/Pleasant
Hill".
I checked some records a cousin gave me for Duncan T. Sellers and
found him as a child of John Sellers
and Ann Tines (I think that's what it says ... Tines). This John is a
brother to D.B. (Daniel Bell) Sellers,
Gabe's father. The mother in the 1880 census living with D.B. is
Elizabeth Ann Cromartie, wife of
Benjamin Duncan Sellers. I have information on her if you are
interested.
Back to Duncan Thomas Sellers (Dunk): my cousin has that he was
married 3 times: M.E. Robinson,
Jane Brooks, and Mattie Palmer. His children are Joe, Ennis, Tate,
Abbie, Carrie, Ella, and Ira. I must
tell you that this family tree that she drew out has no dates and no
verification other than her memory
and what people told her. She was very good about these records, so I
don't discount them, but they do
need checking out and verification.

John D. SELLERS, born c. 1824.

If anyone has any information about the family of Narcissa ROBINSON, I'd
greatly appreciate it. The ROBINSON family is very important in my HALL
research (my g-gps--Sarah Angeline BROOKS married John James HALL in
1874. JJ HALL was raised by the family of John "Bud" ROBINSON
in Sepulga, Conecuh Co., Ala.)
Thanks.

Aaron PACKER is a name of interest to me for two reasons: 1. He owned land near
my gg-gm Rachel BROOKS in 1860 in S. 12 of Tsh 7N, Rng. 13E. (no further info
on a connection, if any exists, between them)
2. He owned land near Jackson LEE and Edward LEE around 1870? in Sect. 13 and 14
of Tsh 8N, R13E. Several LEEs were mentioned in his estate records (See below).

Butler Co., Alabama
In Chancery at Greenville, Ala. Special Term 1871
Jackson LEE vs. James H. PERDUE, adm. of Aaron PACKER, deceased
My poor hurried notes seem to indicate that Jackson LEE was owed $280 for land
purchase???;
Nancy PACKER and the heirs of Moses PACKER, deceased, are mentioned.
----------------------------
Butler Co., Alabama Tuesday, May 17, 1881
H.C. LEE vs. Henry LEE et al, minors
Petition of H. C. LEE for guardianship of the estate of Henry LEE, Laura LEE,
Hugh LEE, William LEE, Joseph LEE, and Madison LEE, minors under the age of 14
and heirs at law of Aaron PACKER, deceased.
H.C. LEE was appointed guardian of their estate and submitted bond of $240 with
J.B. ISHAM and J.F. LEE as sureties.
(on back of above) State of Texas, Fannin County, May 24, 1881
Heirs of Aaron PACKER--

Mary MARSH of Vernon Parish, La.
Henry and William PACKER of Vernon Parish, La.
Nancy A. LEE, wife of _____ LEE of Fannin Co., Texas
John R. PACKER of Morehouse Parish, La.
Joseph PACKER of Fannin Co. Texas
------------------------------
Aaron PACKER had land in Sections 13 and 14 of Township 8N, Range 13E [my note:
near Jackson LEE]
and also in Section 12 of Township 7N, Range 13E [my note: near Rachel BROOKS]
Some of this land was sold to Robert PERRY and W.O. PARMER (some of this land
transferred to Benjamin CARPENTER). Some was sold to J.R. STOTT

Butler Co., Alabama Feb. 9, 1887
Ransom SEALE was appointed guardian to protect the interests of Alexander
T. MARSH, Addie _? MARSH, Martha Ann MARSH, Mary Jane MARSH, Margaret PACKER,
Lelia Ann PACKER, John Ella PACKER, heirs of (No. 3) Martin/Martha(?) LEE,
deceased; heirs of Ann LEE, deceased, wife of Robert LEE (No. 4)
all minors and grandchildren of Aaron PACKER, deceased.
[My note: I believe the word grandchildren is a mistake. It appears that Aaron
PACKER left his estate to his nieces and nephews, children of his brother,
Moses PACKER. Some of his nieces and nephews were deceased when his estate was
finally settled, so their share was divided among their children.]

--------------------------------------------------------
I'd like to determine if the Fannin Co., Texas LEEs mentioned in Aaron Packer's
estate have any connection to Jackson LEE or Edward LEE or to any of the LEEs
of Butler Co., Alabama. It appears that two of the daughters of Moses PACKER
married LEEs. I found Moses PACKER (appears to be the same one) on the 1840
census of Barbour Co., Ala. living near one Stephen LEE (who need further
research). Moses and his brother Aaron PACKER were on the 1850 census of Pike
Co., Ala.
Let me know if you can shed any light on any of these people.
