to his parents while he was serving in the Confederate States Army. The letter speaks of conditions at the
hospital there, his lodgings, the smallpox problems and the fact he would not
be able to get a furlough.17

by his grandson, Clarence Gravlee.
Clarence also said that when his grandfather could no longer run the
plow with it hitched to the 2 horses, "why he figured life wasn't worth
living any more." John was a very
self-sufficient individual, very frugal and his farm was quite prosperous. He also smoke a corn cob pipe.44

600 acres of land, which was very productive and self contained with a cotton
gin, saw mill, grist mill, barns, blacksmith shop, 2 smoke houses and whatever
farm machinery could be obtained at the time.
He had bees out back of the smoke houses. He was the first man in the community to have
a tractor; it was a Ford model. He even
had a garage for his Model T Ford
touring car. The garage was across the
road directly in front of the house. He
never learned to drive, but would get one of his sons or grandsons to drive for
him. When he first married his wife,
Missiniah, they built a log house, but eventually built a two-story frame house
in the front of the log house. The log
house was then used to keep dried fruits, canned fruits or anything else raised
on the farm that could be preserved. His
grandson, Clarence Gravlee, can remember being bathed as a little boy in a wash
basin on the porch by his grandmother, Missiniah. In 1997, family members still resided in the
frame house.52,44
